I spotted this in the corner of a friends shop I had not visited in a while. I know it is a BBC Chevy. He said it is a 496. Is it a Mercruiser? Is the intake any count for an offroad rig? Do you know any power numbers?

I know it is missing the throttle body. Can you delete the crosssover tube on the front that runs from head to head?

I would think it would have a nice broad flat torque curve?

Any thoughts or comments pertaining to installation into a 73-91 K series truck.

thats an 8100 vortec. the 496 8.1L

theres marine version, industrial version, and truck version. basically same engine. the marines got the bigger hp. 425 iirc.

hmmmm, interesting..... that looks like a Volvo package, that's Volvo red... but i've never seen a 496 Volvo package... then again, only about 1 in 25 of the motors i see are Volvo's.... plenty of Merc's version around... i'll check into it today for ya....

oh, and just be aware, the marine ECM's are VERY primitive and stripped out... no O2 input, etc....

I have a buddy who has one also. It's the same as your picture. I would be cool but need an aftermarket ect and maybe wiring.

Those 8.1s make.gobbs of TQ and would be sweet in a K5

Thanks. No rush or anything this engine aint going no where. I was thinking about a FAST systme with it.

It has no ECM or wiring now so Something would have to be done about that anyhow.

Here is the 5.7 from Indmar on Mastercrafts

Indmar is local to me, about 30 minutes away. I actually know the men that own it. It is a family affair. We have done a lot of dirt work for them over the years. They are good people.

Glad to hear. I have a 94' Mastercraft boat with an Indmar LT1 engine in it.....love it!

And my suburban has the 8.1L......great power for sure!

it's definitely Volvo's marine package.. you can tell by the valve covers in addition to the red paint... if i get some time after lunch i'll take a peak in my books... now that i think about it, iirc, i do actually have a customer with that motor....

Bump for you to look in the book.

So is that intake a factory GM 8.1 intake or is it boat stuff?

Being marine is the block heavier or is it just standard GM truck?

sorry, busy week, haven't been able to look it up... it's drive service season....

yes, that is a GM intake... it is also just a standard GM block, but with brass freeze plugs... but that should be a cast marine oil pan... more than likely not usable in a rig... pickup also...

one thing to check is the cooling passages for corrosion.. hard to tell from that pic without the accessories if it was freshwater cooled, or raw... raw cooled motors run seawater thru the block, exhaust, etc.. whereas fresh have a heat exchanger with antifreeze in the block and raw in the exhaust...

if need be, i can get the cam specs, but i'll have to do some digging... some things will need to be changed but definitely a worthy candidate for a rig...

like i said, i don't see a ton of that package.. Volvo's aren't overly common, the numbers are probably more like 75 to 1 in favor of Merc...... I probably have 200 Merc gas motors in the marina, and less than a 1/2 dozen Vulva's...

i'll see what i can dig up on that particular mill next week.. my boss is going to Fla tues, so i should be able to spare some time...

Raylar in CA is THE place to go for 8.1 hotrodding. The build some re-dumb-ulous stuff for and out of 8.1s. they bought the tooling from GM after the General killing the bigblocks. so they can cast blocks and heads. and they make forged.... aluminum....and stroker...... for the 8.1. nobody else does. but THEY DO.

600ci and 765 HP (SAE) @ 5500 rpms; 820 ft/lbs torque @4200 rpms

yes. yes they do. nothing is cross compatible though.

the cast center sump pan thats on it. is the same one thats on the industrial ones. and there are turbo and nonturbo intakes. that have porting differences in the back of the intake.

at work we maintain a bunch of these 8.1s in natural gas generators at gas plants on the pipeline. all, of them are turbocharged.

hey Boz, thought i'd get back to this before i forgot again... :doah:

gave myself a 5 minute refresher yesterday on Volvo BB packages... one of those smack yourself in the head "I knew all this stuff" moments.. :haha:

anyway.... it would really have helped if it had the plastic cover on it to denote what series it is.... GX, GXI, etc.. there are a few variations.... if you find the Volvo tag on it, usually on the back ps boss where the bellhouysing would bolt up iirc, i can verify what it is thru the serial number and give you some specifics...

there are basically 2 variations, the GX, GI and FX iirc are 375 hp versions.. the GXI is a 420 hp package... the main difference between the 2 being the 420 hp GXI has a steel crank as opposed to cast.. the hp differences are done with the cam profile and injector sizing...

if you get me a serial #, I can get you specifics on all that, injector lbs, etc... tho cam specs, I'd actually have to put a call into Volvo, marine stuff can be a little funny like that, proprietary bs type stuff i suppose...
