Trying to figure out what to do with alot of stuff around the house and the boat was brought up. It's been sitting since 92 but was covered most of the time.

The outdrive was grenaded and dad could not find cheap enough parts to justify rebuilding. But a couple years ago he found a place in Florida and ordered a whole new out drive, assembled in box ready to be put on, so I have that sitting in the shop. Also I'm sure the motor needs a decent rebuild and new carb but is fine mechanically (probably should be looked over anyways). We fired it up last year and it started right up and ran great. The hull is perfect condition so no problems there. There is no interior which is where ti's gonna cost me but I've got a friend of dads that who said he would help me out.

Its a great boat and for probably not much money I could get it going again. I'd never be able to afford a boat like this anytime soon so it'd be nice to have.

My question does anybody know anything about putting an outdrive on OR do you think we could figure it out. I know I don't have the knowledge to do the whole thing myself. Also with the motor I don't know enough to make sure I check everything that needs to be checked.

Open invitation to anybody that thinks they can help me get this back in the water--ALL food and beer is on me for however many nights we have to work on it.. I'd love to be able to take the family out on dads boat this summer.

what year is the boat?

I'm not overly familiar with older OMC stern drives... I know the Cobra's pretty well...

either way, you'll want an install kit for that drive.... gimme the year, and I'll get ya a part #.. it'll have the o-rings and gaskets needed... installing drives is simple... shift cable is the only part that can give ya some grief usually..

you also wanna check the bellows and all other rubber parts for dryrot and cracks after that amount of time... make sure you put oil in the lower. they're usually shipped dry......

make sure those floors are solid.. if they're ply, good chance they're soft...

was it a freshwater boat or salt?

I done a few OMC outdrives. As Roykin said they are preatty easy to install. pretty much bolt it on and adjust the shift cable if needed. Besides the other stuff he mentioned. Check the stringers for rot. Stringers are the 2 wood boards(usually covered by fiberglass) that the engine mounts bolt into. Check for rot around the engine mounts.
If you replace the carb be sure to either rebuild the stock one or replace it with a Q-Jet Marine carb. Do not use a carb designed for a car.

Check your local Library. Theey may have an OMC manual you can check it out to help you with the install. It should have info on the engine and OD

I've been trying to find the paper work on the boat today, so I don't know for sure but I believe it's an '82

Floors seem solid except for the spot in between the driver and pass seats. It's a raised portion of floor and that's the only spot that seems soft. looks easily replaceable

Freshwater only never saw salt water. It was the family ski boat.

Is there anything that should be a red flag that would be cause to just scrap the whole idea?

a bellows is the rubber, accordion looking rubber piece for the exhaust to the drive.. looks like this...

if the motor is sound, compression-wise, etc and you have a new drive your in pretty good shape...

check the fuel tank for corrosion, leaks, bad hoses, etc, thats a biggie... add a primary spin-on fuel seperator before the motor... obviously do a full tune-up, oil change, filters, etc... check your plugs for any signs of rust or corrosion.. you'll also wanna throw a new thermostat in it... lube the steering....

it'll add up with all that incidental stuff...

I know it will add up but since I have the major new parts already here I figure why not put a couple thousand into it and make it new rather than making payments for 10 years on a new boat.

I know I'll have to deal with most the stuff you mentioned but just starting to look at it looks pretty sounds and I think the problems should be low.
