I have an 89 K5 TBI with an Advance auto remanufactured "tough one" long block with around 2000 miles on it. The rest of the engine has around 170K. Recently when I attempt to accelerate quickly from a stop the engine seems to bog down for a second or two, then start accelerating hard. It also has a bit of throttle lag all over. Last night it actually cut off on me. Check engine light came on, but it normally does that when the key is in the on position but the engine is off. I have an code for my EGR system for a while, but it was not doing this when that first came on.

It only does it randomly. I drove it to work and back today and had no problems, very quick response.

If you got a code for EGR system, check it out. That may be your problem. If the EGR is sticking open or opening under acceleration it could cause the bog you have because it leans out the mixture too much.
