What is the purpose of the bracket and bolt above the shock in the picture below?

orignal shock mount spot for blazers.

that thing is messed up :eek1:

so someone took and drilled a new hole lower and bolted it on.

Thanks for the answer. See you on the plow site. Was there originally one like that on the passenger side rear as well?

I seen something that rusty come out of the ocean once, it looked like it had been there for years. I like your wooden body.:D

Driver side has the bracket above frame.Passengers side shock bolts to frame no bracket.Check that side for shock mount cracking frame.

Can I weld a grade 8 bolt to the entire width (2 1/2") of the shock mount to get the shock in the original location?

I see you are no stranger to wood fab.
What are these bowls hanging on the wall, is that your work?

Not sure what you mean by welding a grade 8 bolt to the 2 1/2" surface area. You mean weld the right size bolt to the mount's face/surface? Wouldn't be strong enough IMO. Been thinking up ways myself to get rid of that shock mount problem. Both K5s I've bought had that one destroyed, both broke the same way, same location.

Make it simpler just plasma cut that old shock bolt out, grind the whole surface area and weld a plate accross the face, drill a hole and put a new shock bolt ($6) in there. However it being that rusted, and since it looks like the body is easily removed? Cut the old mount off, grind it flush, and build a new one outa 3/8 plate and weld it to the frame. Just finished repairing mine, the bolt hole was the size of a quarter, wobbled out and beveled in, welded it all back closed, grinded flush, drilled new hole and good to go. From what I've read the reason they break is the hole gets worn/enlarged, the bolt gets loose, slams up and down, cracks the mount at the base and breaks off... least that's what happens to both of mine.

Way more info than you asked but I'm still groggy, little background never hurts. :)
