OK guys here's the skinny. I spend most of the year working in Iraq and can't weld worth a damn. I was looking to throw 1 tons under my 87 blazer. Low and behold, I found a seller that had a set of CUCV axles that are described as the following for $3k......

"HERE I HAVE A SET OF CHEVY 1 TON AXLES OUT OF MILITARY CUCV PICK UP LOW MILES, FRONT IS A DANA 60 OPEN 456 GEARS, WARN LOCK OUTS, AND THE REAR IS 14 BOLT WITH 456 GEARS, DETROIT LOCKER. THE FRONT HAS BEEN SODA BLASTED, PAINTED, GEARS AND BEARING INSPECTED AND REPACKED, SEALS BEEN REPLACED, ALSO HAS NEW FRONT CALIPERS, AND PADS. THE REAR 14 BOLT BEEN SODA BLASTED, PAINTED, GEARS INSPECTED WITH A GOOD WORKING DETROIT, NEW SEALS, AND CONVERTED TO DISC BRAKES (NEW CALIPERS, NEW PADS, BOLT ON BRAKES, OUTER RUBBER BRAKE LINE THAT ALLOW YOU TO USE YOUR ORIGINALLY HARD LINES). THESE AXLES ARE READY TO BE BOLTED IN, ALL THEY NEED IS GEAR DOPE, THE GEARS IN AXLES BEEN SPRAYED DOWN WTH LITHIUM GREASE, AND SEALED."

I emailed them and they said for an additional $100, they can reposition the rear spring pads and shock mounts. Total bill would be right about $3500 to a shipping dock. So..... do you think this is a bit steep, or would having someone else redo a set of axles be cheeper?

I wouldnt pay that. You could buy a CUCV set, have the shock mounts and spring pads moved by a welder and still come in under $1500. That other two grand gos a long way towards a front locker, 35spl outers, crossover steering, and rebuilds.

Yeah, too much. For reference I payed $1,100 for a cucv set and I'm in lala land out here where everything is too much $$$. Look around for some others. Look for entire trucks. Lots of stuff for sale lately that "needs work" but has a set of good tons under it.

If they were rebuilt completely then not a bad deal, but it sounds like they were just inspected and cleaned up.

For that much I would expect at the very least new wheel bearings and new rotors in front at the least.

As an aside boyce who resells quite alot of one tons is well over 4 grand for a similar axle.

he'll probably get that. but i would look for a set around $1500 or so. maybe $250 for a shop to move the perches and your good.

I'm thinking if I can find a set of DRW 1 tons , I could order a set of stock HMMWV wheels and tires from TWF and save about $600.

There has to be new in the box Cucv 1 tons at surplus depots online. I Just grabbed a 10 bolt front for 300 in the crate. Granted I'm sure the 1 tons will cost significantly more. my axle was in excellent shape and was complete from hub to hub including brakes.

Does anyone know of a surplus site I can grab a set of CUCV 1 tons from. I know about Government Liquidations, but unless the auction is close to home, it's of no use. I need a site that can ship.

Well Boyce equipment is out of the question. It would be cheaper to get the axles from the first shop I found. Boyce wants $2536 for a rebuilt D60 front and they list stock parts like R&P and spring plate/U-Bolt kit at additional costs well over $200. The 14B is priced at $1450 with similar additional costs for additional items like gearing, locker, but they do offer to move the pads. Highway robbery at its best.

What about a 14 bolt s/f? Then you can keep the front axle and six lug rims? might be a cheaper consideration for a DD/ weekend warrior. This is what I'm leaning towards. 496truck did it that way and CUCV2

a lil much, but if you look at it most of the hard work is done.a gone thru 60 with fresh rotors and brakes with good bearings and a rear locker.the prices start to add up quick.you can buy the axles from someone cheaper and still spend 2 gs more to do what they did and if you are not mechanically inclined or do not have the tools, this ends up being a alright deal.if you need something already put together and just want to bolt in this would be alright.i know a lot of people on here will say do it yourself and save money.but in the end,you may pay just as much in parts to do what they did and still have the same axles.what size tire and wheel and lift are you going to run.the stock axle can handle 35s fine for a dd and weekend warrior.the 10 bolts can be beefed up a bit with hardened axles and better ujoints and handle 37s.i have been wheeling with the stock 1/2 ton axles for years with 35s.the rear was the problem for meand i blew 2 12 bolts.if you can find a good 6 lug 14 sf axle, youd be good up to 35 or 37 if you are easy on the front end.just a few things to think about.

I thought about going the 14b SF route. My plan is a set of H1s from TWF. If I go with a DRW set of tons, I can just use stock H1s. If I can find a set of 3/4 ton D44/14B, then I would go that route so long as they are 8 lug. (Really want the TWF H1s) That would give me some an option to switch to tons in the future should I choose too.
