What size are the bolts holding the bumper to the frame? I am going to torch the old bolts off and need to know what size to buy to put the new bumper on.

The brackets to the frame are usually 1/2" bolts, but its best to make sure by measuring the old ones as they do differ sometimes, depending on what bumper it has--a 3/4" wrench fits a 1/2" bolt, that might be a quicker way to measuer them...when I need to measure a bolt shank I use my drill bit case as a guide...

Most chrome bumpers use 7/16" carriage head type bolts to bolt the bumper to the brackets, they have a nickel "sheild" wrapped around the heads...I wouldn't use regular hardware store carriage bolts because they are soft, grade 2 at best, and will not be strong enough in a collision...

How many of the 1/2 inch are needed. I am thinking six but am not sure.

both donor and receiving vehicles are 88 suburbans

Are there no bolts in place currently?
And LMC has a good diagram of the bumper mounts if you'd like to count what's needed and sizes for your specific truck.

We torched off the good bumper and I am not near the good truck. The good truck has bolts in place and a crumpled bumper. I guess I should go to where it is and count.

By "torched off" do you mean cut the bolts? Do you still have the side braces? Each of those attaches to the frame with 2 bolts, but they are not 1/2". Maybe 3/8 or 7/16.

The brackets are still on the bumper; the carriage bolts are still in place. we cut the bolts that hold the brackets to the frame rails.
