Well I'm still undecided on what t-case I will be running. So im thinking about saving some $ and putting a np205 in now, and later upgrading to a LOMAX 205

Will a 205 bolt up to a 700r4? Will I need some sort of custom adapter? Can I still use the same output shaft on the 700r4?

Also I have a rebuilt th350 from another project that I could use. Its a 2wd th350 from a late 70s suburban. Would I be better off using the 350 rather than the 700r4? This truck may or may not see street use. If I do drive it on the street it would just be around town, so overdrive is not really needed.

Thanks for your help,

-Ryan

i've had the same debate over and over. but i think i'm gonna go with the 700R4, i won't use the OD, but the 3.06 will give me a 108:1 crawl ratio compared to a 88:1 final with the TH350. you can change the output shaft using one from ORD or AA. but what i'm planning on doing is to use a 208 adaptor & then tapping and drilling to get the 203 to bolt up. i'm not sure if this will work with a 205....maybe someone can give some insight on that. i do remember seeing an article in i think the 3rd issue of 4x4 garage where they did a 4wd conversion on a 2wd 88-98 pickup and they bolted a 205 to a 700 using a spacer/adaptor that was WAY cheaper than changing out the output shaft. hopefully someone can give a link to that company or as soon as i get a chance, i'll post up the company's info from the magazine.......

yea the lower 1st gear is the reason why I wanted to keep the 700r4, but I didnt want to swap out the shaft because then that ment tearing the whole trans apart and then I might as well rebuild it while im at it. Your link doesnt work :( . The fourwheeler magazine link does work, thanks for that phil.

They mentioned about the d-shaft being close to the trans pan. Im guessing that clocking the t-case up would gain more shaft-to-pan clearance? Can anyone recommend a good company that makes a 205 clocking ring?

Some of the T350/208 setups had an aluminum spacer that's about 1 1/2" thick. This is the piece that you need to adapt a 700r4 to a t350 205. The 700r4 and t350 have the same 4 bolt pattern it's just the 700r4 4WD output is too long to bolt up to a 205.

I paid $60 to have a new output shaft put in, not counting the cost of the new shaft.

Not sure how your are going to run a 700r4 and not use the overdrive?

i am running a 700 with advance adapters parts to connect it to the 205. Wis hI would have heard about that switch kit, that would have saved me a lot of money. I guess now if I toast my built 700 i can swap in a stocker a lot easier! Does anyone have a good link to where you can purchase the switch kits?

nooo...really f****n loud :doah:

I know . My K10 was driven on the road a few time's. Around 50 mph I would guess.

It screamed.
350 Hedder's with 9" after them , and dump . And a 4 Speed , with 4.10's and 44" Grooved Bogger's. She screamed ..... :D But I enjoyed every minute of it.

See the thing is, If the trans is gonna get taken apart to swap the shaft, then I might as well have it rebuilt. How much do 700r4s cost to rebuild?

I have been looking to put a 205 behind my 700r4 as well. I have a line on a fresh 400 for $350 that I'd like to use instead. I am not sure that is going to pan out so I may just bolt up a 205 anyways. Sounds pretty easy.

I'm gonna have to start paying attention to this as well... I have a 205 sitting downstairs that I eventually want to put behind my 700.. bulletproof, fixed yoke and driveline e-brake are my reasonings..

Tho I'm holding off until my stock 700 let's go, then I'll do a BO stage 2 or 3.. I'm assuming BO can put one together with the short shaft easy enough..

One thing I need to find out is if I'll run into any issue with my 205 as it was the 10 spline behind a 465 version.. Not sure if I'll be wanting/needing to upgrade the input shaft or something... any insight into that anyone?

Check out the classifieds. I have a 700r4 that I will swear to you is good to go for $400. I HAVE to sell this before I can rebuild the 4l80e in my DD suburban. Otherwise it ranges anywhere from $1000-2000 for a rebuild.

You will want to swap out the 10 spline for a female input. you will have to machine the case to get it in. I held on to a 205 10 spline for awhile, then the lomax came out. not worth doing the work to the 10 spline case and still has the figure 8 mounting pattern.

For anyone with money you can get a Klune-V and adapt any trans output to any t-case input, with any clocking you want. A Klune-v and a 205 are around the same length as a 208 with a slip yoke and there is more room then a 203/205 setup.

I drove my truck with 44" tire, no doors, no inner fenders, no bed down the street at about 55mph the other day. never made it into overdrive, but it was still fun. and a little LOUD!:D
