Bolts

Me too,Tractor Supply --you can fill bags up with a scoop and weigh them,they sell them by the pound,and the quality is good--they do not have a large selection of metric bolts though,at least where I go..

It beats buying one bolt for a buck each at box stores or hardware stores..
I have bought 5 gallon buckets of hardware at the flea markets too,usually everything is all mixed together and you must sort thru it all and separate it,but its worth it when you spent only $5-$10 for a full pail weighing 50 lbs..

Northern Tool used to sell an assortment of bolts with a cabinet for reasonable money,I haven't gotten a catalog from them in years though..

The bolts at Tractor Supply range from roughly $3 a pound for grade 2,to $4-$6 for grade 5 or 8 bolts..

And yeah,metric bolts are a pain in the a$$..most hardware or box stores stock only a few in the drawers,not in bulk,and never seem to have the pitch or length I need,or enough of them,and it's always a hike to the only hardware store in the next town over that has a very large selection of them--they know your boned as far as getting any elsewhere,so they charge accordingly..

If you strike out there,then you have to go further to a Fastenal store,and hope they'll sell you anything,I heard some only cater to businesses here and unless you have a "business" and apply for a account there,have a tax #,your likely to be sent away empty handed..
W.W. Grainger had a similar policy and now they don't have a store in the industrial park 5 miles away any more,probably lost a lot of business being snobby as far as who they will sell too..

The few things I bought there,I had to use someone else's account and pay cash to get anything there,and they looked at me like I was lying when I showed them the letterhead from the business a friend had to prove I had "permission" to buy stuff there..

It's too bad because they do have some decent quality stuff like Dayton winches,motors,and they were about the last place local you could buy things like pulleys,key stock,bearings,pillow blocks and other similar items from..now the nearest one is 22 miles away..

You aren't going to save money buying one or two of a couple items, but when they have a 10% off or free shipping deal, buying an assortment is normally a good deal. Sometimes they don't have what you need, but that's as with all places, especially when you get down to the real oddball stuff. I don't feel bad tack welding and cutting bolts off my header flanges when I'm using cheapy grade two bolts. For the prices they charge, it's totally worth it IMO.

As you, I tend to squirrel bolts away, more so now that I've got a bolt bin setup from a store. I used to just have the longer sizes, and cut down what I needed, but it's so much faster to have 6 different lengths of each size on hand lol.

Anymore I weigh what the trip to whatever store is going to cost me in money (and more importantly, time) and what the invariably aren't going to have, that I'm looking for, online will save me tax, along with the avoidance of cost (current per mile rate is something like $.55) to drive that most of us likely don't think about very often. I live and work far enough away from most retailers that time and cost are worth considering, at least as far as I'm concerned.

I used Bolt Depot, got all the grade 8 flange bolts and flange nuts(grade 8 carriage too) to do my body mounts. They are East coast based.

local hardware supply by the pound or mcmastercar which I usually receive next day (based out of So Cal).
 
Blue collar supplies for me local enough.
I buy an assortment every time I go there and most of the time I find what I need at home when I need it.
I also have a few 5 gal buckets full of bolts and nuts from the trucks I parted.
