89 Blazer Restoration
FINALLY!!!
Got the 89 Blazer back from my glass shop. I had him do a new windshield and have him install new rubber for the doors, windows and wing windows which is not fun. He had it WAY too long. About 5 months! Though it was nice having this project out of the way so I can focus on the black 79 K5, there was no excuse for him to take this long. Finally got it back yesterday. Along with the wait, I had a new dent in the wheel molding trim, dirty carpet that I JUST installed, and some scratching close to the wing window. The rubber around the wing window does not look perfect but better than the old brittle stuff. Not happy at all with his work or how he treated this vehicle. At least its finally back in my garage. Now its time to finish the interior work.

Long wait for disappointing results.

I like to do my own work if I can but not always the case. Take it to a professional you expect professional work.

I agree. I usually like to do most things myself. I could have knocked this out but was looking for someone who could save me some time since I was working on another K5 and at the same time he would get the windshield done. I was expecting better results from him since he has been doing vehicle glass for many years. I think this will be his last square body wing windows he ever does. Most glass guys forget what a PITA it is to do the rubber on the wing windows. Here's a good video showing you how to do it correctly.

I doubt many current glass guys are popping windshields into rubber grommets.

Agree. Most newer guys haven't done the two piece style on the older trucks. The biggest reason I went to him is he has done 100's of windshields in square bodies in the past and installed one in my 87 K5 in my work parking lot. Figured he would do ok on my wings for this 89 but I was wrong.

Is he making you “whole” for the damage that came back with it?

I need to do new seals on the passenger wing window in the C10 and I've been putting it off because it's a pain in backside.

He's not doing much for any damage he did and its hard to prove it. He said he took some money off for taking so long. Found some more scratches today washing it.

Yeah they suck to do. That video above helps and be sure to get the correct seals since I guess there's 3 different types and also the rivets you need.

On another note, I fixed 2 issues with it today.

First was the cheap oil pressure gauge I had put in it since the stock one was not working at the time I put the new engine in. I just needed a quick way to make sure the new engine had good pressure. It was just laying on the trans tunnel not even mounted. It started to leak really bad at the block, so out it came and NPT oil plug next to filter went back in. Stock oil pressure in the cluster is now working after sender was replaced so this wasn't needed and an eye sore.

The other issue I had was loud squealing brakes when first applying or lightly applying the pedal. I thought for sure the pads were down to the metal squealers but nope, still had plenty of pad. After months of this noise, I finally gave up and bought some cheap ceramic pads and installed them tonight. No more squeal! Not sure what causes pads to start squealing like that but its annoying. Could be old age since this thing has been sitting for 20 years. Seems to stop just as good as what was in there and only $14 at Rock Auto.

Update on this project. Replaced the old shocks with some Monroes. The old ones were definitely shot. Next was the automatic hubs. The 4WD never worked with them and I thought they were faulty. Actually, one was missing when I went to remove them. Had some trusty Warns laying around I replaced the automatic hubs with.

Guts missing:

Warn manual hubs installed:

Next was the tilt column. Two issues... first it was loose. Also, it had a bad column shift spring. Got the spring replaced but it's always a HUGE PITA to get the columns torn down this far and back together again and working properly.

Trim rings were pretty beat up. Found these from OER that match the stockers fairly close and go on nicely.

Cleaned up the under carriage and painted satin black. She came out nice and looks minty after I applied some wax.

Beautiful! Whats your plan for it? Keep and enjoy? Sell after enjoying for a little bit?

Unfortunately I need to sell it. Need the money to finish the basement and have too many horses in the stable so this one has to go. Its been nice just sticking with a stock build. I've got to drive it and put some miles on it. Its a good example how nice they can look restored in stock fashion.

If you need top dollar, BringATrailer. I suspect it would bring big money
I thought about BAT but I think there's a 2 month wait and I currently have it at Gateway Classics now. Gets it out of my garage and frees up some space. They've done good for me in the past and I'm not looking for top dollar. Gateway just sold my black 79 K5 (Project Bandito).

@muddybuddy Not sure how I missed your post. That looks like the same Blazer. They sure want a lot for it don't they. I don't see the link anymore so they must have sold it. It looked really sharp when it was finished.
