I realize this should probably be in the Audio section, but I think it'll get more response in The Garage. :o

My mom just bought an '04 Chevy Suburban LT with the 6-Disc Bose System. It sounds like crap. No bass. A real muffled sound altogether. From what I've read online, the subwoofer should be under the center console somewhere. Does anyone know if there is a fuse that commonly goes out? (Before I start pulling it all apart) It seems the rest of the radio functions properly.

I've also read there is a microphone in the cabin that reads and adjusts the sound setup. I've read the wire can get pinched and mess up the sound setup. Does anyone know where that is? There's a mic looking piece just to the driver side of the overhead rear climate controls, above the rearview mirror. And then there's a mic or speaker above the driver door. I'm sure one of these has to do with the OnStar system.

Also is there a way to pull the stereo without throwing the Theftlock? I want to be able to check all connections in the rear of the head unit in case an aftermarket was used then the factory unit was slapped back in prior to trade-in.

I haven't had a chance to really investigate. Been too busy to lay hands on it. Thanks guys in advance for your input.

The mic. on ceiling is for onstar, I don't know if it works with the bose system or not, I have never heard that. The trucks and avalanches have the sub in the console. Tahoes and I believe suburbans also have them in the rear. There is a grill in the pass. side panel that they are behind.

You can probably pull the stereo, but if you unplug it, it will probably lock.

Also, if there is no bass, check the manual equalizer, someone may have turned the treble up all the way. There is a knob on the right side of the cd player. Push it straight in to access the settings.

Easy things first

The factory sub isn't really much even when functioning properly. Not sure if your mom would want it but, you can add a sub by using a line level converter which would install under the console main compartment. The factory amp is under it with two plugs facing rearward. The plug on the pass side is what your looking for... the 1st channel is dark green for + and light blue/black for -, channel 2 is dark blue/white + and light green/black -. Mines a tahoe with center buckets, plenty of space under them (I used the drivers side) for an amp. I put a 10 " sub in the rear. Absolutely huge difference and an easy install.
This is just fyi.

Thanks guys. Yeah I've gone through all the settings on the head unit itself. I've heard the subs can be in the rear or under the console so I wanted to see if I could narrow that part down. I've heard even if there's a phony grill in the rear it can still be in the front. She's got a flip-down aftermarket DVD screen with separate player under the driver side rear captain. The screen isn't working either so I've got to figure that one out too. I'm certain it's aftermarket. I can't remember the brand but GM uses Panasonic don't they?

I doubt she would want an aftermarket sub, just this one to sound decent. But that's always an option. Thanks again guys.

Thanks, I've owned it for 12-13 years. Bought it with 55,000 miles and everything original. The original owner special ordered it and never even took it in the rain. So it was in really awesome shape. I need to update the pictures, since those it has been beefed up some.

I've got a 1994 Suburban with 220k+ miles (still in great shape)... looking forward to your results.

The mic on the side of the overhead console is for the onstar. The speaker looking grille on the roof is actually for the climate control. There is a small fan inside moving air across the sensor for the automatic climate control. If you put your ear up to it you will hear it humming.

The sub in my 07 dually is pretty pathetic as well. I have it maxed out in the headunit and it is still a little lacking. I'll be upgrading one day, but other mods to my fleet keep taking precedence over thump thump

Really, I didn't know that was the climate control sensor. I thought it was the speaker for onstar. Never use onstar and I never knew where the sound came from. That makes sense, cause my fathers truck has always made noise and we thought onstar was listening..lol
