Like the title says I bought a 60gal tank and with a bad compressor from a junkyard to use as an extra air storage tank. However now that I have it home it's apparent that the bottom is fairly rusty and has some serious pitting even on the outside. You read on the internet about how air tanks can rupture and become missiles through the roof of your shop and kill you to death and the passing by bus full of nuns. Then I also read that worst case it rusts through and starts a pinhole leak at which point it's time to replace the tank.

I couldn't get a picture of the inside of the tank but there are definitely some rust flakes floating around in there.

SO here's what I'm dealing with:

This is the depth of one of the deepest pits.

And then it looks like someone attempted to weld the feet back on...

So is this worth trying to use as extra air storage or am I going to kill a bus load of nuns?

cut in half and make 2 nice fire pit burners out of them .

and watch the used tanks . lots of them are rated to 140 psi max and if your system is 175 then your in the death zone unless you regulate the feed to it .

Too much at stake w/ pressure tanks. There's a reason they're rated. Someone has already booger welded that thing - I wouldn't trust that alone.

So I guess I'll have to chalk this one up as a loss then huh... $50 down the drain, although I did get a handful of fittings off of it though
