Bought a Nuvi 200W GPS and just wanted to say so far i love this thing. Does anyone own one of these that knows how well they work offroad? I know they will give coordinates and you can input coordinates but what does the screen look like at this point when offroad? Should i be thinking about buying the Topo US 24K map.

I have a Nuvi 760, and it "works" offroad, but doesn't usually have a road to show you. It will show stuff like lakes, etc, and will do distance and speed and all that, of course. But it doesn't show topography (unless you buy the map), etc.

If you want to use it off road, you are going to need to pick up an offroad map for the areas you will be using it in. Then you simply add the files to the Nuvi and you should be all set. Not sure on the cost of the new map files though, may be cheaper to buy an off road equipped unit. I did love the simple interface and ease of navigation of the 200 though.

A lot of the point to point gps like tom tom, nuvi, etc are not capable of loading topo maps. Make sure you check carefully for compatability before throwing cash into those maps.

i have a tom tom and i love it. i have to look at other brands to see how they match up.

I just bought a Tom Tom and dont like it. I'm taking it back Saturday for a Garmin. The main feature I wanted was to be able to type a business name in and it show me how to get there but this thing really lacks that capability compared to the Garmin I used in my rental car a couple months ago.

my first gps was a larance. biggest piece of sh*t i ever bought. i loved my tom tom one. i wanted a new one with a bigger screen and that tells you the street name. so i picked up a nuvi 650. i liked it but i think the tom tom was better. i can add voices and what not on the tom tom. i just bought maps of italy for my garmin and it was 108.00 shipped. so like said above. make sure your gps can load the maps if its from a outside party that makes them.
if your not sure do a search on google for tom tom forums. that where i found alot of info on them and a few neat tricks as well.

I have a Garmin and it does ok for off-road... like dbreid said it basically shows you water/land in stock form but it does get the job done.
I've marked spots out in the dunes before and it'll work like a fancy compass when it comes time to get you back to them... gives a direction and a distance.
