Bouncing speedo

Changed my cable for the speedo and it`s still bouncing around. Took it off from the turbo 400 and put a drill on it and it holds steady.

Is there something the matter with the gear in the trans? :dunno:

This is on my 77 with a turbo 400/205
 
Dunno, but my fresh rebuilt 700, New Lokar cable, and new Autometer gauge do the same thing under ~40mph. Above that and it's steady.:dunno: Might just need another lubing.
 
Got a similar problem, not huge but annoying.

What's the best lube to use?
 
Dunno, but the stuff that came with my Lokar cable was kinda like lithium grease in a small tube. Slightly thicker than Vasiline IIRC
 
My factory service manual states a bouncing speedometer at low speeds is a faulty speedometer head. The repair is to replace the speedometer.

Ok...geuss I could try that. I got six other speedometers I could use.
 
My was bouncing for a while. It finally stopped when I jumped it. :D

Now it don't move at all. :doah:
 
Did you replace just the inner cable? or the whole outer cable and inner? If just the inner, you may have some old sticky grease in the cable that needs to be cleaned. If you replaced the whole cable, maybe you need to check the routing and minimize any tight bends.

I replaced the whole cable with one out of a parts truck I got.
The routing is good...just like factory.
I checked the cable before putting it in and oiled it with light engine oil, it ran smooth.
