I filled up gas tonight and kept track from the last time I filled up.

The last time I filled up, the odometer showed 1855 miles. Tonight it showed 1915 miles. So thats 60 miles even.

The kicker is, I filled up 14.7 gallons of gas!!!

That comes to 4.08 mpg! And, that was all city driving. I never went out of town during this span on the last tank of gas.

What can I do to get this mpg UP? I know plenty of others on the site running pretty much the same set up I've got, and Blazers weigh just the same as my K30 does. Maybe its time to swap a smaller camshaft in?

that does suck!
start with the basics, good engine tune.
is your speedo corrected for the tires? that makes a big difference.

Yikes!!!! And I thought I had sh1tty mileage.....

Is this one of the trucks? Do you have smog restrictions? Increase the compression ratio and other efficiency things maybe...? (roller EVERYTHING if you have the extra $$$$)

Tune up is very recent. Runs very good and strong, too. Also very quick and torquey.

Speedo is also correct. The owner before me already had that recalibrated to compensate for the 35's.

I may need to downsize to a SBC!!!

Yep, this is the black and silver '85 K30. No smog crap on it at all. (except for the smog pump, which is still hooked up) Roller EVERYTHING would be pushing it....my wife would not let me do anything to something that runs good.

How short are your trips? I'm thinking that if that 454 is always running with the choke it will never get great mileage. I know around town my mileage isn't spectacular...usually under 10 MPG...but I also tend to drive just a short distance to work and back. By the time it warms up I'm at work.

Hey you get worse gas milage than my Firebird :) I get 5 mpg. Of course I mix 91 and 110 so it more expensive for me :) Try driving for a long period of time and see what happens.

this time of year in town driving usually consists mostly of idle time.
not truly indicative of engine trouble.
swap a cummins turbo diesel into it.
only 360ci to feed at idle

You might look for fuel leaks, particularly towards the back by the tank. Could someone be stealing fuel? How much time is spent idling or warming up? Could the fuel pump diaphram be going bad (manual pump) and leaking fuel into the engine?

Yeah, the choke is running to and from work. It's not even warmed up when I get there either.

You ask, "What can I do to get this mpg UP?". The answer is simple, sell it and get a ricer!
wink.gif

I agree that it is probably just you running around short trips. In town is always bad. This time of year it is worse with traffic and cold weather keeping the choke in longer. Add to that the 454 (and big tires) in stop and go traffic and I KNOW you don't ease around. Plus, you say the guy before you had it recalibrated but do you know it is right? Add all this up (especially with a slightly slow speedo/odo) and it is perfectly understandable to me. Take a trip in it after verifying the speedo calibration and then worry about it if it still looks bad.

I have driven a long period of time (on highways to other towns) and I never saw the mileage get better than 6 mpg.

Mike, sorry, no Dodge stuff in my truck!

If I were to diesel this truck, I would like to figure a way to get the new Duramax to work in it!!

A 502 would produce a pretty wild ride but who could afford it? I think I'd invest in a locking gas cap first.

I have your solution!

Swap me the big block for my new small block!!
smile.gif

'85 K5 : Run it til it breaks, then fix it and go again!

No fuel leaks anywhere either. This truck is very clean throughout.

No person in this town has the balls to even try to steal gas, let along ANYTHING, from me or my place!
wink.gif
I will let you come to your conclusion to WHY no one has the balls to do that!
laugh.gif

Not sure on the diaphragm either. The carb is a fairly new Edelbrock #1904 installed about a year and half ago. Would need to check it out sometime anyways.
