Is there a sure way to check to see if the brake booster is truly shot or not? I read that there is a in-line filter, but I haven't looked for it yet.

Put a hand held vaccum pump on hose, it should hold vaccum if hose and diaphram is good. If you have power assist it is working.

"pump up" the brakes with vehicle off (removing any vacuum that the check valve held in the booster) then, with all vacuum removed, start vehicle while holding pressure on the brake pedal. The pedal should easily fall towards the floor with your foot on it. There is a one way check valve, connected to teh booster in the engine compartment..you can just pull the hose from teh booster and suck on it..you shouldn't be able to from the booster side of the valve, but you should from the carb/intake side. Did you have problems with high idle too? Vacuum leak (bad booster, hose, grommets) could cause that.
