Hey guys, so my 1986 crew cab has the old style brake controller, the type where you plumb a brass T into the master cylinder and physically have brake fluid going into the brake controller in the cab. I would like to upgrade this to a more modern electronic brake controller. I am not finding much for information on it with google searches on how to use a modern trailer brake controller on a 86 chevy.

Any brands you recommend?

Tricks to installing them? (how do they install with no electronics on an old system?)

Thanks!

Mike

I'm all ears as well....I need to get my 89 crew cab set up with a brand new break controller setup as there is no trailer brake wiring at all on mine

I too have the Prodigy....the unit works great, even if my trailer brakes don't!

I was looking at kinda piecing together something like this from stuff off amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0033WDG58/ref=ox_sc_act_title_4?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
(this is the same controller that is in my current 96, I've been happy with it)

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003721C0U/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
(little connector to make the electrical easier)

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000CMKG6Y/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
(simple wire installation kit to hook up controller and run lines back to adapter)

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002Q80GS/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Am I missing something? Remember, I said I don't have any type of trailer brake system on my truck at all....so I have to install everything. I think this looks pretty good for ~$80!

Thats what I have gathered from today, I ended up going with the Tekonsha 90160 Primus IQ Electronic Brake Control. From what I am reading, it basically needs a few hot wires, a wire to the white wire on the brake pedal and.... then go to the back. It has to be much better than my really old school scary hydraulic brake line sticking into the cab idea.

Had installed the prodigy in my old truck. Had the old hydraulic unit in it. Got air in the system and could not get it to work right. Got the truck cheap, because the guy couldn't figure out why the brakes sucked.
