hey guys im replacing/fixing my rear brakes so my truck isnt so sketchy when on hill sides and i just need to know what size the brake line on my truck is. Im going to be replacing my hard brake line that goes down the frame rail to the rear axle.

so does anyone know what size it is

If you have an extra vehicle to take when you get brake lines, I always rip off one of the lines, with a fitting on the end so they give you the correct line size and fitting when you get your lines. Ive gone in before asking for lines and been given the metric style fittings and have them be wrong. So if you have yours you can check the threads on them to make sure they are the same. I would suggest getting some type of flaring tool and a tubing cutter, like the ones used for cutting copper, that way you can bend your lines up and cut to the right length so you dont end up having to make lots of coils to get the lines to fit if they are too long.
Fairly cheap tools if you look in the right place.

I got a flare kit with a cutter for like $10, nothing fancy but it works great and never had a problem. :thumb:

yea im going to napa to get some brake line tomorrow and the guy there is pretty knowledgeable about older chevy k series trucks so i should be able to get the right stuff. really i would like to have a spare piece to compare by but owell i guess mine on my truck are gone lol.

yea i do have a flaring tool and cutter i was just goin to buy a 25 foot roll of the brake line so i dont have to always go to the store when i need it.

That should prolly cover it then.

I put around 25 ft of break line on my van, and that only did the front brakes:eek1:. They have such a goofy system that all ties into this junction box thing in the middle and then shoots lines all over heck. But on these older style its pretty simple.

yea i think everyone should be required to own a older GM vehicle so they get introduced into how things work on vehicles because really everything on these older chevys are pretty simple in them selves lol just my thought

I like using the 25' rolls of brake tubing better than the ready made lines--for the reason the "bulk" rolls are made of much thicker gauge steel and usually have a better anti-rust coating than the lines already made up do.....also I have found on many later model cars & trucks, some had odball metric threads that cant be found on ready made lines,so your forced to re-use the old fittings,or spend days tritting to parts stores in hopes of finding a "adapter" that will make regular lines work--and even harder, finding an employee at such a store that isn't clueless and knows which fittings to sell you,if you dont know which one to get, then your pretty much boned..

My Ford Contour has 11MM threads on its rear brake lines, good thing I didn't try tightening the new lines I put on it after I noticed they felt sloppy in the threads as I was putting them in!-the new lines had 10mm threads, and 3.8x 24 threads would have ALMOST fit in too,but had I wrenched them tight I'm sure they would have stripped the brake hoses and calipers !....had to cut all the old line nuts off and re-use them,as NO parts store had the adapters in stock, which cost more than the barke lines did....

You will likely have yo re-use the line nuts on the master cylinder and junction block/proportioning valve over, there are 2 that have 9/16x18 threads that are not easy to find at parts stores, and adapters are expensive,IF you are lucky enough to find some with the right threads..

Arent most of the fittings they give on premade lines made of brass?? Im pretty sure alot i have gotten are and I would think the brass would strip before stell caliper:dunno:

Every brake LINE I've dealt with has had steel line nuts on them...I have never seen brass ones, but just about every rubber brake HOSE has breass ends on them and they DO strip like lead,if you try screwing in the wrong thread brake line!..:doah:
