brakes go out when engine dies

Let the tires roll so I could steer!!!!

He had em locked up several times.

This is where a technique called threshold braking comes into play. Not saying I can actually do it but if I practice I have gotten pretty good at it

This could have gone real bad. What would you have done in this situation?

Didn't look like the tires locked up at all, just that there wasn't much braking power with the motor off and hence no assist.

That being the case, push the brake as hard as you can with your right foot, hit the e-brake with your left, and steer into a tree rather than risk hitting people. Or put it in gear and let out the clutch if it's a manual.

As Eric did mention, if you're at the point of locking up the tires, it's better to keep the tires from locking up. Most of the time you'll stop better without locking them up and you'll still have steering which is usually more important than stopping.

There is the famous video of the gal going down lions back in a k5. I think it was the motor that died also. Is this common

You don't lose the brakes when the engine dies, it just becomes much harder to press the pedal and requires a longer distance to stop due to reduced pressure to the calipers/cylinders. The booster is run by either vacuum or hydraulic pressure, so without the engine running you don't have the increased pressure the booster provides.

THAT Lions Back video is downright scary

She is so lucky... One wrong bounce a little earlier and that could have went a VERY different way.

I'm sure it's just as common as people who don't tune up their trucks, don't check the brakes and undercarriage regularly, and don't promptly take care of leaks, yet still want to go wheeling.

My bus has a 12v power brake assist on it... I haven't looked into it yet, but if the key is off or the engine dies, an electric motor provides pressure to the braking system...

Not sure what it would take to set up something like this on a trail rig, but I'm interested...

I'm sure some of the big diesel semi truck guys can give some detials...

I've had my brakes overheat coming down summit at HH. I had a hard turn about 400 foot down a steep slope that i wasnt gonna make at the speeds i was going,A pretty hefty slope to my right that would have probably finished me off and then to my left a nice big soft dirt mountain side. I got the bumper into the mountain and eased myself down into a slump in the decline at which point i could set the e-brake and let em cool off, For a while. Hot brakes smell like ass btw

My e-brake is still attached :dunno:

And why not go down hill in a lower gear instead of roasting brakes?

Exactly! :waytogo: low range, e-brake, or maybe another truck behind it with a tow rope sharing its brakes. Or how about just parking it and fixing the problem instead of taking an unnecessary risk.

They went up and down the Lions back a couple of times before the last decent, and by that time the brakes were so hot the fluid boiled...which meant no brakes whatsoever.

If your rig stalls like in the vid you posted, be smarter than that guy and get it stopped ASAP. You do have braking, you just need to push harder to make it happen. Once stopped get it into park. I think that guy felt he could get down the rest of the hill without engine running...
