I am in need of a good breaker bar. I am debating brand, size, & length. I need a stout bar that I don't have to worry about putting some good pressure on. I am debating 1/2" or 3/4". I would like just a 1/2" bar but I am thinking about using a 3/4" with an adapter so I can have uber bar stregth. I am also debating length. I want no less then 15" but am really looking at 18-24" bars. What do you guys use/recommend? Brand, size, etc. I am willing to pay decent money for a good bar. Snappy, Matco, Mac, Proto, Craftsman, Armstrong, ....?

I want a bar that I can do D60 kingpins with if I need to and not have to worry about it giving up on me. D60 KP's are like 600lbs of torque.

Snappy can't be beat... I've had the same 1/2" drive, 24", for 20+ yrs now and has never flinched at me.. even with big pipes on it...

Tho a 3/4 would be nice for kingpins...

for king pins I would think you would want a 1 incher. D60 king pins torque at 600 but sometimes it can be in excess of 650 or more to break them loose.

good luck with kingpins and anything. Heard of more than a few guys needing a 1" gun to take care of that job. Heat is your friend when it comes to them.

Matco makes a great bar. Snap-On does too. Either can fail. Some just have better luck than others.

Tried bust loose the crankshaft pulley on my buddy's Fiat, takes like 200ftlbs.

Bent my Craftsman 1/2" with a cheater pipe. Ended up getting a 3/4" breaker, also Craftsman, and that thing came right off. I've abused it since then ... no kingpins since I've only 10-bolt fronts, but it's nice and beefy.

On the farm, we usually just have cheap ones that appear stout. No real point in spending alot on a breaker bar with you have a 6-8 foot (or longer) pipe on them. Course we use impacts alot more now then we a few years ago.

If you plan to use it for doing D60 king pins then i suggest a 3/4" breaker bar since a 1/2" will break at the joint trying to go anywhere near the 600 ft. lbs. Also don't try to use a 3/4" breaker bar with a 3/4 to 1/2" adapter while doing the king pins or the adapter will break.

Isn't the kingpin like a 1" hex head or somesuch? Seems like anything that big would *require* 3/4" or 1" drive.

<grunt> <grunt> ... :D

D60 kind pins are 7/8 socket, thats why I recomended a 1 incher. I would want the tool bigger then the piece Im trying to break lose.

I don't have a D60 yet but might one day, and I just want to buy 1 tool now that will be able to take some wicked torque without having to worry about it snapping when I have 300+lbs of torque on it.

I haven't needed anything uber heavy yet but I have had a few jobs were over 250lbs was required and I want something tough.

I have a Craftsman Digitork torque wrench good to 250lbs and as a shadetree I won't need anything else. I just need a good breaker for stubborn bolts and heavy duty seat of the pants torque.

I would go 3/4 or 1 inch. I have broken 2 1/2 inch breaker bars. One was a really nice s/k one that could also be used as an extension. That sucked. I got a complete 1 inch China socket set on sale at HF for 90.00 + tax. It has a ratchet and breaker bar in it that I won't care too much if I break but it should be hard to do.

At the shop if the impact can't break it loose then I just use a pipe... 90% of our tools are snap-on though and I've never bent one (although I've bent other brands)... and if that doesn't work (only happened a few times) then we have a 1" two handed beast of an impact that we run a separate air-line from the tank for and it'll break off damn near anything :)
So I'd just suggest a big pipe...
