Broke my vise last night!

So I was trying to change the U joints on my D44 last night and I broke my vise trying to push them out. They had been soaked in PB for a couple days and c clips removed. Do I need to go buy a press today or what?

Lay the shaft on a piece of wood like a 2x4 and find a socket that will fit inside the yoke, then hammer it out. And use a big hammer.

Or you can do a trick I saw a guy on the trail do. He hit the yoke where it welds to the shaft with a hammer while holding it in the air. And it knocked the joints loose with a couple hits. Not sure if it will work on axle shaft though.

For the rilly tough ones I take the torch ond cut the cross out of it then straddel the cap in a vice between the jaws in the vice, I have yet to have one kick my a$$ doing this methed

i used dpi method in my basement. Big fin hammer and an impact socket. May take about 15-20 hits but she will come out.

haha ya, i did the same thing putting my u joints in, i just sanded on the inside where they go before i put the other ones back in, worked good.

Really? Just take the axle shaft in there and they will do it? Do they sell spicer ujoints? I've been hearing thats what to use for a "cheap" joint. I've got precision joints because thats what Oreilly had.

Don't take this comment the wrong way, but I know other metal workers are thinking this too.

You can't break a REAL vise. I don't own a real vise either. Neither of us can afford one either.

haha ya, i wish i had a real vise, but i wouldnt trust napa...after working at the warehouse/store near me...they're cool guys and all but i wouldnt trust any of them with my truck. ill take the couple hours(if its a bad one) and do it myself.

I've broken two vise's at the shop and they both broke in the same spot...
Out of curriosity where did your vise break?

I will take a pic later...This is the second "fake" vice i have broken in my life. One when I was 15 at a bike shop...anyways. If I use a 2x4 do I just place the joint on the 2x4 and pound it out with a socket into the 2x4 or do I place a socket on both sides? Thanks for the help guys.

I use two sockets... one that's big enough for the cap to slide into and another one that just fits into the ears...

Then just hit the smaller socket with a BFH and it'll push it out the other side into the bigger socket.

socket on both sides...i doubt you will drive the cap into the board b4 it busted up..or use 2 2x4's with the cap between the 2

Sweet! Thats what I was doing with the 2 sockets until it got really easy to turn the handle on my vice. Guess thats what I get for using a pipe for a cheater. I am dumb!

No seriously, I dont have a press either, but I dont think I would be using a vise either to push it out. If its really bad, I've use the 2x4 and a dead blow hammer + socket to do it.

Hmmm interesting break... I always seem to break the block that the worm gear threads in and out of...

Ahh yes, the harbor freight/blue point/low power vise.

I got my vise from a friend.. he was cleaning out his garage. Made in USA, must be made in the 60's.

If you think good vises are expensive, you should check out trying to find a good quality anvil.

I've heard schools are a good place to try and find old good tools.

Hey fool thats a cummins tools vice for you info! LOL either way it was like 30 bucks and ive used it a million times. What is the story on these "real" vices I heard about earlier? How much are there? Where to get one? I am pretty sure I can't but is it posible to MIG weld my vice?
