Broke my vise last night!

Hey fool thats a cummins tools vice for you info! LOL either way it was like 30 bucks and ive used it a million times. What is the story on these "real" vices I heard about earlier? How much are there? Where to get one? I am pretty sure I can't but is it posible to MIG weld my vice?

Lol, Harbor Freight

Look familiar??? lol

I good vise is several hundred... mine is very similiar to the 2000 snap on one, (though thats rediculous, and really is more like 1k). You can find some deals sometimes on old vises, look for garage sales. They wont have the doo-dads, such as an anvil spot, nor a spinning base.

It's probably cast so I'd say no...

if it came from the same factory, I'll say no as well. It is listed as "cast iron body", which is probably why it cracked, and did not bend. If your curious, you can certainly try welding it, you have nothing to loose. I know harbor freight uses some weird mixture of "cast iron". Sometimes it seems more like "die cast" than "Cast iron"- English is tricky sometimes. Since its already broken, just follow the normal process of welding cast (heat up/cool down), and give it a whirl.

Thanks for the link. I don't know how to weld cast so... I think it will still work upto 4"-6" because I had it extended so far when it broke, the back "pivit point" wasn't even making contact. If that makes cense. I think as long as I don't run it out that far again I will be OK!

I bought a Wilton a few years back at lowes, and it was made in China. I think the more expensive Wiltons are still made in the usa.

Not everything made in china is of bad quality- some of the stuff has been rather decent. Taiwan used to be the king of cheap tools (like the ones sold at k-mart and walmart), but now all that is in china too. The tools comming out from taiwan that I have tried (and bought) have been of excellent quality. Has just about the same fit and finish as craftsmen. Its no snap-on, but its getting there. Where snap on still has a big lead is the gearing on the ratchets...

Is it strong enough?

Dude thats awesome. Have you used it on any really tough joints? Seems like for 30 bucks you can't go wrong. I gotta do some ball joints too so I will go get one tomorrow.

Thats the one I have, and it has worked well so far. I use an impact on mine. Pushes the ball-joints and u-joints right out.

Strong enough is not an issue. I blew the end cap off with this. A needle fell over and I didn't catch it before hand.
