Broke 2 bolts and one of the ears on my steering box tonight. Looks like the pitman arm hit my spring on compression. I have the ORD crossover steering which I took off my 83 on the 71 and it used the superlift 1104 or whatever number pitman arm that ORD sells. Since running 52s on the front and having the front spring mounts risin higher than stock there is only like 3-4 inches clearance at static. What pitman arms are you guys with crosover and 1st gens using?

Are you still using the d44 in front? Maybe a d60 has less clearance, but I have the ORD crossover and pitman arm, but am on 4" front stock length springs. Mine doesn't have anywhere near enough flex to bottom out in that area. I guess that doesn't help.

have the 60 with ORDs arm. thought maybe frameisdifferent some on the 1st gen. Also my front spring hanger is higher than stock so shortens distance too. My draglink (kinked one from ORD) goes up some to hit steering arm on axle. I could get away with a straight draglink just fine but if I can find a shorter pitman arm should make it flat again too. Read something about a ford van arm but want to see if anyone is using it on this vintage rig

I have very close to the same issue but mine only 'rubs' without any real interference but I've always thought it could be better.

Will a shorter arm effect the power output of the steering box?
Maybe it would make it stronger/quicker?

Yup, I had to run a shorter arm too, got mine from WFO. I started with the longer one(superlift) and it was just too close. I don't know what application the shorter one I am using came from. WFO sent me 3 different ones and the shortest one worked great. I wana say it came from a Wrangler or something like that. www.wfoconcepts.com Trevor is a real nice guy give him and call and ask him if he has a part number for the arm I ended up using...if he can remember...we cross shiped ALOT of differnt parts to get my xover/high steer to work with my short lift and 454 on my D60 :doah:

Here is a shot of the superlift, longer one for compareson>>>

Look were the brake lines are on the frame and you can see the diff....

Good luck

Positive stops would help also. What about turning left under full compression? Even with the shorter arm it looks like a possibility.

Talked to WFO and got a wagoneer pitman arm ordered. He is building a 69 k5 with links and coils in the front and its the one he is using. Said it abotu 2" higher toward fram that the superlift 1104. Should be here thursday. AWESOME CUSTOMER SERVICE TOO!!!!!!! Very helpful.

Wouldn't a shorter arm make it react slower? I used a J@@p arm, and the knuckle stops fail to hit.

What springs are you all running w/ rub/hit issues?

shorter I mean closer to frame up and down. not hole to hole.
running 52s and I rose my front spring hangers up for more approch

I'm thinking no, not noticable amount anyway. My setup works great so far, I still have to install my ram (this winter I hope) but all in all it works great. I can't see how it would slow it down anyway, the throw is the same and the drag link makes up the difference in length to the steering arm so...same same.

I was had a different arm in mind than what he was looking at. He was talking about a shorter drop, i was looking at a shorter throw...so we were both right.

Back on topic, the ram is the way to go. Installed mine a few weeks back, steers the same, 2wd, 4wd, 4wd low everything locked. One hand like grandpas caddy!

Cool :D

Ya I can't wait to get the ram installed..sucked trying to steer in 4x4 with a front locker..I had to plop it into 2x4 just to drive it on a dirt road...I'm still getting use to the 1Ton setup I put in w/front and rear locked it drives very different. Crazy traction is worth it though

I have an ARB in the front, and didn't even realize that I hadn't unlocked it a few times except for looking down at the switch

I also used a Jeep arm when I went to my WFO double arms. I just found one in a junkyard and had it reamed to accept the larger tie rid end.

got it all together... a while ago but will post pics now. Used the wagoneer arm. Tons more clearance on both sides of draglink now. Actually had to angle grind the threads of the end on the draglink to clear the frame
