Broke two extensions today, and my ratchet blew up

Was working on a clutch job on my neighbors 'runner. Freaking toyotas. With their lack of oil leaks, aluminun drivetrains, and 14 years/200k of operation on the original clutch; makes for some tight freaking bolts! Trying to get those top two bellhousing bolts out was a pain. Had to do the old "stack up every extension you got" trick. Tried to use the breaker bar, but by the time you eat up all the slack from twisting all those springy extensions, you got no room left. So I had to use the ratchet, with the cheater pipe (not my favorite thing to do). Two busted extensions later, I'm still trying to get this one bolt out. Then there's the big POP, and we heard something fall. It was the center out the ratchet just blowing out the back, along with a spring, and some little pin. Stuffed it all back in there and hammered it back together, and what do you know, it ratchets once again. :D Finally got it out. Gotta get the flywheel machined tomorrow, then to put it back together again. Oh yeah, did I mention, taking the starter/bellhousing mounting bolts out freaking sucked!!!??? I'd like to strangle the engineer that decided that was a good place for a couple bolts. Not the worst job I've done really, just not as easy as a chevy. At least the gearboxes don't weigh much.

Pointless thread, really. Just had to vent a little.

I know what you mean. I had to replace the clutch and then the transmission in the 86 I used to have. That's when I found out where the phrase "You have to be a Chinese midget to work on these damn things!" came from. :haha: At least you got it out.

Yeah, it was pretty bad. Nothing like a steel bolt seized up in an aluminum part. Akward positions and tight spaces is bad enough, but super tight bolts is just too much. :o

You do know that they have this neat engineering tool, it looks like a human hand, and on american cars they use it to make sure that everywhere can be accessed if it is an area where wear can occur. In Japan it is used to make sure that nobody is going to get their hands in those areas. Yota's are great for longevity, but total pains for repairing.

Yeah it's no fun to think you feel the bolt loosening up just to find out it was only the tools breaking.

What brand of tools? If you used some that say China or Taiwan on them, you got what you paid for.

Indeed. I'm not complaining about that at all. But they have taken out a LOT of bolts in the past, but these were the ones that made them break. They were those wobbly extensions too, so I'm not surprised they snapped where they're necked down a little.
