i've had this pic for a while. it's a sm465 output shaft , that has a 208 or 241 behind it .my cousin broke it in a woods buggy. bald tires, straight 6, open/open. he got the transmission from me, which was in a stock truck with a 305 in it.

Is that rust on the edges?
It looks like it has been waiting to go, either that or he dumped the clutch, even with bald tires if you have it in low you can snap that shaft.
From the looks of it though it looks like there was a defect, if it snapped from torsionnal force it wouldn't be this clean cut it would be more of a spiral break.
Was the break outside of the case or inside?
was there a grove where it snaped?

it was broke flush with the back of the trans. i don't know if there was a groove or not. i just found it funny that a 32 spline shaft broke. he was also in a creek when it broke, they pulled him out and thought the t-case broke, so they tore it off and someome went to get another one. then the seen there wasn't an output shaft anymore.

I saw a 14 bolt shaft get snapped and the break looked identical to that...almost like it was faced off in a lathe. Wonder what causes that kind of break, I'm guessing a heat treat defect.

Did that to a dana 60 stub shaft. You could see the splines had twisted a full 90 degrees before it broke.

Who says straight sixes dont have any cahonies?.....:D.....their low end torque CAN bust things as good as a V8 can!..
