broken 6.2 starter mount

I called yesterday about a 1984 k30 for sale. The man selling it told me up front that it has a broken starter mount (ear he called it) and has been waiting for a welder who specialises in mending blocks to fix it for a couple weeks now. he said he bought it this way from a farmer, and didn't know how it broke but that it is common with 6.2's. He also has purchased a new starter because the old one was shot. He makes his living rebuilding rearends and manual trannys, and has a couple k30's for sale. My question is this common to break the starter mount? And can blocks be repaired this way or should it just be avoided? thanks in advance.

If I understand the description what broke is where the starter is bolted to the block (two bolts vertically). If that is the case, then it is common IF the rear starter brace is not present. Basically the starter creates enough torque to crack the block /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif!!

I've never dealt with a break like this so I am no help on if it can be fixed. However, one could get a block and build a engine, granted the asking price for the truck was worth the work. 6.2s arn't too hard to come by, might even get one for next to nothing from here. Keep us up to date!

It is common and I bought an engine a couple of months ago from Pick n pull without looking and got home and saw that it was broken.
It still was worth the $100 I paid, it was from a 1ton so J code.
But I am going to try and repair it and if it's good I will use it as is and I will let you know.
It won't be anytime soon so don't hold your breath, I have few projects ahead of it.
What I was planning on doing since the piece is missing was to weld a plate on that corner then put a brass bolt in the whole and fill the hole with weld then make a good brace so there is no load on the bolt.

I modified mine when I installed the MT28 (or is it 28MT) starter. But I'll try to get a pic of it tonight.

The outer starter bolt hole was broken off of my 6.2L block when I bought it in 1995. I didn't see it at the time I purchased it from the salvage yard. The machine shop was able to repair it and weld on a new ear for me. I installed the starter brace (just a few dollars from the dealer) and it's been fine since '95 and for over 100K miles. My starter does grind a bit, because I don't think it's lined up quite right.

The problem can be fixed. I don't know if it can be fixed in the truck or not.

Picked up the brace from the dealer today, only $2.55 /forums/images/graemlins/woot.gif I will post the part number and get pics once I get home.
