what do i have to do to get the beast running again

It's not hard. If it your first time, it will be fun! Another thing to learn! Post up pics and questions!

worst part is. I was literally like.. 1/4 mile from my house!!
damn truck I could see my house!

how much is too much for a used axle? I found one on Craigslist, about 20 minutes away from me, Would save the hassle of driving an hour plus to the junkyard.

if its a 10 bolt i wouldnt spend the money on it. id think junk yard route would be best. there is a couple now at ontario pick apart

yeah, I looked on the website. and its about ~42$ plus tax if applicable.
so, 42+ 20 for gas. might as well just pick up the one off craigslist for 70 saves the hassle and alot shorter drive than to ontario

I just need the axle shaft, everything else is okay I think..

and thanks mune, I appreciate it. but that would be one hell of a drive to help I'd have to say no even if you Could make it!

I would strongly advise you pop the cover on that thing if you haven't yet. You say it's locked up, AND it sounds like you broke an axleshaft, I'd make darn sure there aren't problems with the ring/pinion and/or carrier components before buying an axleshaft hoping that will fix the problem. Not normal to snap an axle on-road in my experience, even with a 10 bolt.

Good advice above.

Changing out a rear axle shaft is typically not too hard. However, if you broke the shaft inside the carrier sometimes it can be an PITA to get the broken chunk out. I've had to pull the carrier completely out, which also requires pulling both shafts, before in order to hammer the broken piece out of the carrier. When it breaks at the spline it normally gets boogered up and just won't slide out.

The C-clip is at the end of the shaft and it's the only thing holding it in place. If any part of the shaft broke it'd easily seperate from the truck.

I'm pretty sure you will need to pull the carrier to get the broken piece out.

I paid $100 for Superior Axle shafts. They are stronger than the stock ones.

It's and easy job. You should check the bearings & seals while your at it.

You should be able to slide the axle shaft in a little bit if you push from the outside.
