broken axle!!

now do I have to remove the carrier to get the rest of the axle out?

How do I do that?
sorry guys, I've never done this before. I wouldnt know half of what I know if it wasnt for the community

Now there are 4 bolts holding a U shaped piece. You will need to remove the bolts and pry the carrier out.

This is important so pay attention to which parts go where. Every bolt should go back where you pulled it from.
The U on the left needs to stay on the left and the one on the right likewise.Make sure you know which end is up too.
When you pull the carrier there will be giant washers on either side which are actually shims that set your backlash.
Be sure to keep the shims on the correct sides too.

After the carrier is removed you can get the broken stub out.

I've done this at camp in the dirt and was finished before breakfast was ready, you got this!

oh **** I broke an axle :(

How much work is it going to be to Throw another in?

Its the Rear passenger side, 87 k5. stock rearend. not sure how It's locked up. But the rear is locked
what do i have to do to get the beast running again

I HIGHLY doubt you broke an axle, when an axle breaks in a C-clip style axle such as yours the axle leaves the vehicle along with the wheel, tire and brake drum. Also you said it is locked up which doesn't happen when an axle breaks.

No, its a broken axle shaft. Tire drum and what's left of the axle slides right out.

And as far as locked up, I was talking a locker. And I Learned I have a govloc/ bomb.

well... I pulled the carrier out. and where the axle slides in, All around the edges are all beat up and mangled.. I think I need a new carrier?

where the axle slides in, its beat up. can I replace that or start looking for new..

It'll buff out.

This is the point where you realize that your better off getting a 14 bolt.

agreed, but I dont have enough money to do that, I came across another 10bolt rear end. pulled the carrier axles etc. same gearing as my rear, so its just a drop in process.. hopefully it all goes smooth!

Now that you are using a different carrier you will need to carefully check the R&P gear setting. You might need to change the shims to a different size to get it set correct.

Good luck.

You should have just put the entire axle in your truck and switch your brakes over... You're in for a world of hurt setting up gears, especially used gears if you've never done it before.

Can you still get the test of the axle? If not if try putting your ring gear on that new carrier as you need the matched set r&p that go together. Hopefully using the original shims it will be close enough to run. Hopefully you have the spiders from that carrier as your govloc stuff won't fit unless its a govloc carrier.

the rear end I got, I just swapped the carrier, and axles, It ended up being the same rear end I had, 10 bolt, Govloc with 3.73s , on both ring gears there is 41 : 11

As mentioned above you need to re-use the existing ring gear as it is a matching pair with the pinion gear. When you say the carriers were swapped out I'm not sure if you are trying to use the ring gear that came with the new axle and just swapping it in the existing axle.

Beating a dead horse here, on top of the host of other problems now present, if the gov-lock is locked up (pretty common, they are failure prone, especially in the 10 bolt), that may very well be why the shaft snapped, and it may happen again even if you get the gears set up correctly.

If you have the other axle assembly, put it back together with the components you took out of it, and put the whole thing in your truck.

BTDT, swapping just the carrier was enough to throw gear mesh off, and I ended up with gears that howled. Didn't drive it long enough to find out what was going to happen.
