So we go to do some wheeling today, new location, some new people, and for me my new (to me) K5. It has never gotten dirty and this place would be a little muddy and tight trails.

The K5 performed pretty good the first hour I rode, it never made it up a 60 degree muddy hill (most didn't). I first notice trouble when I was going over a fallen sunken log. As I crept over it the truck made a loud tearing sound ( we soon found that noise was the fan tearing into the lower fan shroud). As the frame flexed the first two body mounts on the passenger side tore loose. You could now slightly lift the body from the frame on that side. It seems like the K5 is rusted at the body mounts. I'll inspect them further Monday but it looks like so far only those two are toast. I'm sure others are too. I had to cut my day short and strap the body down to make it home.

I'm a novice so I have to ask how much would someone charge to fix the mounts on my truck. Is the job too much for a Non mechanic to attempt. Please give me feedback.

I did the same thing to my k5, except it was the rear two body mounts that I tore off the tub. Wound up replacing the tail pan and floor pans out back, and had to get new body mounts built to fit.

Damage

So it seems that the first three body mount hardware on the passenger side are toast. In all three cases either the metal ring and or the rubber is gone, there is nothing holding the body to the frame. I'm broke so I'll have to try to replace them myself in my backyard. I'm going to order parts from LMC today. I hope PB blaster can work some magic.

I've broken and replaced quite a few. The front most mounts are easy because you can access both ends of the bolt. I just put large breaker bars on them and turn and break the bolts if they are too rusty. The ones under the front floor boards can be a pain if they are rusty. There is a captured nut that the bolt goes through and that frequently breaks free. If that happens the only thing you can do is take hole say and cut a hole in the floor directly above the body mount so you can gain access to the captured nut.

Last time I bought the mounts they were about $80 each at the dealer. There are 3 parts you need: mount, bushing, and big washer thingy.

Same basic thing happened on my '90. The metal ring/washer thing rusted out and then let the rubber doughnut fall off, so the bolts were still tight but there was nothing holding it to the frame.

They are not hard to replace, with the biggest issue already stated that the runs in the middle of the body have captured nuts that can spin free. I would soak them in penetrating oil for a couple of days before messing with them. An impact also seems to help breaking the bolts free without breaking the captured nuts loose.

body mounts

I ordered the replacement body bushings yesterday from Energy Suspensions, not bad price $90. I checked Summit, Jegs and LMC, two didn't have stock and LMC was OEM replacements, not improved replacements. So I'm hoping that I'll get them by this weekend so I can get her running before Labor day. We suppose to be wheelin at the new spot then.

Last week I ordered mine from energy susp. as well. All of my bolts broke off and I had to cut into the floor. My question is, on the stock bushing above the metal frame mount the bushing has a metal "cup" with a shaft that runs through the middle. The energy suspension bushings do not have the upper "washer/cup." Do the energy suspension mounts need an upper washer or not?

Instructions

I downloaded the instructions from the website, that cup is factory, and we supppose to reuse them. I don't know the condition of any of the hardware we suppose to reuse, so I plan on fabbing some of the parts.

I should have just stuck with the factory replacements. I really don't feel like finding more rusted out ones in the junk yard. The only ones I can find at the dealer are with the upper rubber mount.

I had to replace a couple of the upper cups on mine. Wound up just ordering the OEM ones with the rubber apart attached, then just pried out the rubber and replaced with the poly.
