I have a broken bolt in the block for the tranny support strut on a th350-np205 combo. I can thread a bolt in near where the starter bolts are located. I'm not sure how to get this broken bolt out. or at least I think it is a broken bolt... maybe it was designed this way.

If you are talking about the transfercase support strut , I believe it attaches to the second bolt from the bottom on the right side of the bellhousing ,right above the starter , the "broken bolt " you are seeing is the bellhousing alignment dowel pin ,there are six bellhousing to engine bolts ,3 per side & two dowel pins , one per side.

I've broken that bolt twice... the first time I replaced it while I had the tranny out, the second time I left it in the block when I replaced the engine. It left enough thread sticking out (after engine and trans were separated) to grab it with some vice grips and just twist it out. Since I've clocked my t-case, I don't use that strut anymore, so I don't think I'll be breaking that bolt anymore.

also some of them used a bolt stud for the brace rod in this position. its a bolt with a stud on the head from the factory made this way.

you bolt the tranny to the block like normal then set the brace rod or heat sheild for starter wires over the stud part of the bolt and use a nut with a waser head on it to holt them down.

or you could be seeing the alignment down hole.

Great info. So I guess my next question would be is the bolt for the strut attached only to the bell housing or does it go into the engine block also?

Mine is a slightly longer bolt than the rest, . It's part of the 6 bolts holding the trans to the motor.

The bolt goes through the strut rod and through the trans bell housing and then threads into the block.

Well I finally was able to get the stuck bolt out. I had to drill down the center of the stuck bolt. I made a jig from another bolt that I had drilled down the center in my drill press. There was just enought threads so that I could mount the jig. With the starter removed I had access drill the hole.

The tcase support strut hole is right next to the starter bolt hole. There was enough shear toruqe force to break the old tcase support bolt. Being so close to the starter bolts any chance that this part of the block might be a week point if to much torque is applies fro mthe trannt tcase?
