I went to fill up the truck with gas a week ago and when I closed it, I heard a pop and then the door just flopped around. The spring inside fell or broke off. Now I drive around and the door closes when I accelerate and opens when I brake. All I need now is all the people to flag me down telling me my gas door is open.:screwy:

Anyways, found a YouTube on a Corsica and figured they must be about the same....ours is easier.

Hit junkyard and found one from a Suburban. $8 later and it's mine.

At the gas door, remove the 3 phillips screws, and the two Torx screws. Pull the gas neck over to the left a bit to allow room for door and bracket to come out.

One I got it out saw that there was a small, thin part of the bracket that broke off.

So I bent the tabs on the bracket and this allowed me to drive two pins out. Then I could take just the broken portion of the bracket and replace it with the Suburban one. Then I could keep my door without painting a new one. Drove the new pins in, bent the tabs back and then installed the "C" spring.

Re-installed in truck and good to go!

My '79 C-10 had that spring bust off on the gas filler door--I took the oppertunity to install a cabinet door lock like those used on tool boxes to the door,to hold it closed and locked, and discourage thieves from trying to steal gas...had to use a dremel tool to cut a slit in the bed for the latch behind the door...

Thanks for the info,

My 90 K5 gas tank door is giving me the same problem, so I ordered a new tension spring from LMC. Get ready to install it, remove my gas tank door...........to find out the spring wasn't bad, it fell out because the small cross section the spring fits into rotted and broke off. ( Same problem as you ).

So I ordered a new gas tank door for 13.95 shipped and will do the same procedure that you did.

Thanks for sharing your technique with us !!!
