The gas gauge in my parents Tahoe has been broken for a while and they finally ran out of gas enough times to think about fixing it. When it is a full tank it will read as full but as you near empty it will read 1/2 or even full. Is there anything to check before dropping the tank? Any connections that fail regularly? I am down at school and won't be able to look at it till Thursday night but I figured I would ask now.
Thanks

it is "usually" the sender on those, if it has alot of miles, do yourself a favor and just replace the pump while you have the tank down, it will come with the sender.

I think it is near 100,000 if I remember right. I have an idea how much of a pain it is to drop the tank. I have done it twice in the k5 once with like 20 gallons in it, now that was fun.

I woul definatly get a fuel pump assembly at that mileage, when you pull it out, look at the little fingers on the sender itself, they are probably worn off.

mine went out at about that same mileage. my fuel guage went out first and then about 10,000 miles later the pump went out. not too difficult to fix, that sending unit is a little bit on the expensive side, i think near $400.

I can't find any recall info online so I guess I am dropping the tank Saturday. Any tips for dropping newer model tanks? I have only done it on the old k5

No tips, but if you don`t mind, let me know how it goes, I need to do the same thing to my step dads 99 burb:waytogo:

Will do. Should be easier on a Suburban I think in 99 they still had the tank behind the axle unlike the Tahoe where it is in between

IIRC, take the charcoal canister out, if it is at the front of the tank, I didn't once and there is a line that runs to the tank, and it broke the charcoal canister, they aren't cheap. And make sure to replace the fuel filter with it.

So it's fixed? How much was the sender assembly? I'm having an identical problem in my wife's minivan. We found senders to be around $300, so I said screw that, always fill the tank and reset the trip odometer, get gas when it gets near 400...

GM recently recalled a bunch of those, we took my mother's 03 tahoe in as it read erratically

a friend of mine had his 03 suburban in for speedometer problems, GM covered parts and labor on the gauge cluster, i believe it was under a recall.

Yeah it is fixed. The sender ran 270 if I remember correct. My parents used the odometer technique for a while but I guess they forgot one too many times. That and if I am towing the k5 to moab soon so it would be nice not to run out of gas in the middle of nowwhere
