The starter bolt closest to the transmission was missing on my 6.2 liter.
I pulled the starter to clean the threads and found the bolt broken off.

After about 3 hours and two holes drilled in the broken bolt I was able to turn it out with a screwdriver. Not ideal I know, but due to the clearences I had a really hard time getting the hole for the easy out centered.

Anyway, due to two hole not being centered I got into the theats inthe block just a little on each hole I drilled. Both are about 1/2 into the threads, meaning the thread from peak to valley is about 1/2 of what it was in two places.

Out of a 360 degree bolt hole, I would say about 20 degrees are somewhat compromised.

I cleaned both bolt holes with a tap and but brand new starter bolts in with red lock tight and torqued to 28 ft/lb per the manual.

Now for the question....
I know there have been problems with the starter bolts and cracking the block in that area. My starter has no provision to but the extra brace on.
How much of a chance am I taking with somewhat compromised bolt hole?
Also, would finding some studs make this situation that much better??

thanks

Got the bracket, my starter does not have the provision to mount it.

What starter do you have?
All starters should have a possibility, maybe needs some modification or it was modified.
If it's after market maybe but if it's stock it should have the provision

Not sure if aftermarket or not, only had the truck for a month.
Next weekend I may have time to wrench on it. I'll inspect it good and see what I can figure out. I'll post a solution if I come up with one.

Post a pic of the starter while you're at it, maybe we can help figure it out.:D

the only thing that you need to be able to attach the bracket to the starter is a one of the long bolts needs to have a 1/4" bolt welded to it. the stock replacement bolt for that part seems to have dissappeared long ago.

If the starter you have doesn't have this, I believe I have a starter I parted, I could send you this bolt.

Update!

I broke out the pressure washer today and blasted a ton of junk off the starter/frame/block area. I have a leaking hose going to my lift pump that coates everything behind it.
Anyway, I found I DO have the extra bolt on the starter for the brace. The bolt is not on the end of the starter like I thought. It is a little back from the end and partially obscurred by the postive battery cable. (and junk from leaking fuel line)

So, I got the brace on and also noticed I have a AC-Delco starter, so that's nice also. I have new starter bolts and washers, new starter brace with new bolts and washers and all is good with the world....for now.

thanks for the help on this guys.

Also,
Iceman, you can disreguard if you haven't sent that bolt.
Otherwise, I can send it back, or send it on to anybody that needs it.

It's funny I just got back from my trip to NY and I had this bolt in an envelope ready to post and I came here to look.
I'll hold on to it. :D

Could somebody post a pic of this brace & bolt?

I've tried to keep 'em separated but I have nuts & bolts from an M1009, a Blazer, a 6.2, a 6.5, and even a couple from a 305 in about 20 baggies:o:doah:
