I was out playing in the mud last weekend, when I heard a "pop" and lost power to the front axle. I am currently running 350/700r4/208 10 bolt front 12 bolt rear 4 inch lift on 35s. I can get another 208 which will bolt in with no issues. I also have the oportunity to get a 205. How much work will it be to put in the 205? Is it really that much better then the 208? Any help would be great.

The amount of work required will depend on what the 205 originally fit.

Is the 205 better? Imo, yes. There is no disputing that its a stronger case but it only has 1.96:1 low range so if you're under geared you may notice the difference.

I wouldn't even think about the swap. 205 may be bulletproof, but the low range gearing sucks.

I think you may have to change the output shaft on the 700R4 and it probably involves some cross member work, possibly driveshafts, and speedometer problems.

Well, you could change the output shaft of the 700, and deal with all the headaches involved, but if the 205 is from a th-350 you just need the factory adapter and crossmember, and a 2" spacer that you can buy somewhere (I can't find it now, but I know it exists because I have one in the garage). you will need some driveshaft work as well.

i have the 208 behind my sm465 and a 500hp 383 stroker i have already broken one 208 in half but am currently building a crossmember for the 208 useing an identical tranny crossmember as the one already under my rig. The 208 is lighter and has better gearing than the 203 or 205 only real thing to do to them is a sye.

Stick with the NP208. They are cheap, and simple to come buy.

I'm running 4.10 gears at the moment I'm waiting on my new 38's to see if I like it or if I want 4.56's

The 241 has even lower gearing than the 208, other than that they are pretty much the same I beleive. And yah they came in the later model square bodies, then when they went to the IFS I think they all went driver side drop.

Found this, "208 low range is 2.61 vs. 241 low range 2.72"

And also a slip yoke eliminator kit is available for a 241, not many options for a 208 other than taking a dodge 208 and swapping a bunch of stuff.

Stick with the 208 as your rig is already set up for that case.

I have a 1989 K1500 Suburban out in the yard with an NP241 and it has a mechanical speedometer.

What spline is the input? I am looking for a 32spline input w/mech speedo to put behind my NV4500.
