Recently I picked up a chrome brush guard for the k5. It mounts on the 4 bumber bolts. It is ok but I think there are some higher quality guards out there. This one was made in mexico. It is heavy and made of thick metal. It has no maker name.

I've seen some photos of guards that go under the bumper and mount to the frame. Others have the tube welded not bolted in. I would think the guards that go under to the frame are stronger.

What brands should I be looking for? What does a hickey guard look like compared to a Westin. All of these are vintage and long gone. I like the classic two bar brush guard.

Do most of the guards have the makers name?

Im looking for a bolt on like you described too, one that bolts to bumper and frame w/o and that the horizontal bars are welded to vertical uprights. I just need something to mount some KC's on.

jc whitney sells one but Im leary of it.

where did you buy the one you have now and where did you get it?....pics?

I bought it used from someone parting out his rig. It was cheap so I picked it up. It will do for now but I would like one that mounts to the frame also and is welded. If you think about it. Since the bars are bolted with just two center bolts. If it were to take a hit I would think the bolts would give.

Any of the big brand chrome type pushbars are for show no matter where they bolt to. For something strong like you want its a build it yourself type of deal

If you can find an OLD one that was sold "back in the day",you can get one thats very rugged and fully welded construction--ones by Hickey,Smittybuilt and Warn were the ones that were most rugged--of course,HEAVY and rugged go together, you cant have rugged without some thick gauge steel...I had a Smittybuilt one on my '72 K5.you could pull another vehicle out of mud with it without fear of it being damaged,it had 5/16" thick plates where it bolted to the frame & bumper and the pipes were a good 1/4" thick tubes...

Most of the ones you see today are cheesy and for looks only, they are made of thin scrap like exhaust pipe and 3/16" thick plate..they fold up easy if you put any force on them..

Just pull your tubes out and put some 3/8 inch walled stuff in there, then plate it from the bottom tube all the way down with some 1/4 or 3/8 plate and be done with it. You'll have a hefty skid and a pretty stout bumber.

The stuff i used was from an extension section off a big drill truck.

I've got a new/old one on the front of mine. Chrome was peeling off so I stripped it down to the nickel plating and it look better now. came with 2 KC 5X7's mounted to tabs and weighs a metric $h|t ton. It bolts up using the existing bumper bolts. Had to modify the impact strip on the bumper to get it mounted. Just measured the uprights and they are 5/16" thick and the horizontal bars sound thick, not tinny like newer ones I have looked at.Thinking about modifying it to add brush guards around lights.
Best part of it is I only paid $40.00 bucks for it with the lights.:woot:

hi.. thanks for posting this info. i actually wanna check it out. but as far as vehicle protection and guards are concerned, i'd stick with the series of hood guards and brush guard i got from Auto Ventshade. no complaints with it.
