Its an 83 j10 4.2 i6 tf727 trans dana 20 transfer case.

He wants to sbc it, but its a driver side pumpkin. This is what i told him would be the rough idea for a swap:

Small block 350, summit sells motor mount adapters, then gonna have to worry about radiator (probably tell him to get electric fans)

He wants to swap it to a manual (he siad 465 but i also told him about the nv3500/nv4500 trans)

If he went 465, this would be easier (and shorter overall length)

Hydro bell housing and clutch (no linkage to worry about)
We would need to get manual pedals, and see if anything with a hydro clutch would bolt in as close to factory parts as possible, if not it can be fabbed (although ive never dealt with hydro clutches before)

465 trans that was orignaly paired to an np208 (i beleive these would be 30 spline in mid 80's) and then put a drivers side drop 241 manualy shifted t case on the back (is there a better tcase? im not sure on all the tcases used on the IFS rigs)

I know we would need to fab crossmembers, and do alot of work, didnt know if anyone has done a swap like this or seen someone that did and could point us somewhere for some more info.

tell him to junk that one and get a J10 from '79 or older.
those are all passenger side drop. they can be had around here (running) for $350 on the low side.
I just sold my 77 for 250.
matter of fact theres a J20 on clist here now.

got a link? his already runs and drives and is in pretty nice condition. maybe he could keep it as a driver and get a toy on the side, i wonder if he could afford that, but i told him about it.

thought of that, but hes not going extremely big with it, at least right now, if i knew he wanted to swap axles id tell him put a passenger side t case in it, get the 3/4 ton running gear i was gonna buy for a side project. If hes not going extremely big or hard on it i figured a newer 241 would be fine for him, especially if we could find one with cable driven speedo (like his truck is i assume)

Why doesn't he put the SBC in first with an adapter from Advanced Adapters and see how things go. I had a J10 for 10 years, my dad bought it new in '81 and put 100k miles on it before he gave it to me, I never had a real transmission problems and we pulled a 25' boat all summer long for, well forever. Just my 2c.

he wanted to put a manual in it, but if all else fails this is the path he was gonna take.
