Budget Horsepower from Cheap Crate - Good Read

400hp is waaaaay easy on a sound shortblock , its just inital cost of heads . I am saving up for the vortec heads for my Chevelle , but not stock ones , the ones that come precut for better springs , drilled and tapped for older intakes , and with dual valve cover holes .

Most defiantly a good read,Thanks .I have the same engine in my blazer but it was around 1.200 when I got it.

Mike

Very simmilar , I saw the ones I want in the Jegs or Summit catalogue ( I forget which one , but next time I sit in the white chair I'll read it again ) .

I most definitley DO NOT want center bolt valve covers in my 70 "velle , but I am needing some power .

I already have a stout .060 over 4 bolt block with everything deburred , Speed Pro flattop slugs , and a Crower 0903 cam .

Hmmm I was gonna build a SBC this summer. Maybe I'll spring for those heads. I was gonna just go with 906 casting vortecs and get the springs that sit over the seat that dont require any machining to work with a max lift of .550

I havent read up on them enough but the stocker vortecs need to be drilled and tapped for an older style intake?

Scratch that question I just remembered they make special manifolds for those heads.

I saw a bit in the latest engine masters stating that Comp has upgraded their beehive springs, which is what the alternative is to cutting the heads for "standard" springs.

I think they are still ridiculously expensive compared to standard springs, you might as well just get the heads cut, still probably cheaper.

I'd consider some of the GM alternatives like EQ cylinder heads, they are apparently better castings, and I believe cheaper than the GM pieces, while typically set up better in regards to springs, etc.

I have a question if anybody might have a suggestion. I have a GM Perf. Parts crate 350HO for my buildup. It comes with 330hp/380lbft...other than stroking it can anyone suggest how I might get a bit more torque out of it or should I just leave it the way it is? I got it from my mechanic with less than 100 miles on it for $600.

Cam and heads need swapped out . Factory crates are on the conservative side .

Or the way to get the most torque at ALL rpm's , more cubic inches .

that's a hell of a deal for that engine. It costs ~$2600 wholesale, beleive me, I know... anyway, it all ready has stock vortec heads on it. and a decent cam.

Yeah it already has Vortec's on it, I just wasn't sure about the cam. Maybe a port/polish and at minimum clean up around the gasket edges. I've heard some people talk about getting better low end torque from stock manifold's vs headers so who knows. I'll talk to my mechanic and see what he says, he used to build engines for offroad racing teams.
