Thinking about adding a build thread as a sub forum to the garage forum, I know this was asked for in the past as well.

Here's the deal though as I know what will be asked for shortly after, all build threads will be lumped together in the new sub forum, I don't want to add tons of new forums for build threads by generation, gmc, chevy, truck, jimmy suburban you get the idea that's what the indv forums are for.

Anyway, you guys let me know if you like that idea or not and a catchy name if yes. :wink1:

its real simple like you said boss.

its a sub forum for BUILD THREADS not gen specific. if you build it then its in here. not general repair like in the garage.

so lets not abuse this and do build threads only .

thanks for the option to pick our options. :thumb:

I like the idea, maybe we could sticky a thread in each subforum that guys could post there links to there build threads in the build thread forum??

All the build threads in one spot would be sweet :pimp:

Will my Chevy truck to Toyota station wagon build thread be be allowed in there :D ?

Chris

I like the idea, as long it stays a "free" forum..... i'm assuming it would, being a sub to the Garage..

and well, as long as my novel isn't lost in the transfer.... :doah: :haha:

Sounds like a good idea.

If you build it, they will come. I like the idea, was wondering the other day why we didn't already have that. Build threads are great to look at late at night when ya cant sleep.

Great idea...

I like checking out help threads or other part specific threads, but build threads are like soap operas... You get sucked in and can't stop watching... Always coming back and checking for updates...:D

If you're going to do it, I think something that would really be helpful is some sort of discipline for the "Subject" line for each thread to make it easier to find relevant builds.

Maybe require that the year and model always be first part of the Subject, followed by the "nickname" of the build, if desired: (ie.)

'77 K5 - The Iron Maiden Build
'82 K5 - The Diesel Warrior Build
'87 K5 - What's Ryoken Up To Build
'72 K5 - Project POR - Triplesticks, etc
'72 K5 - The "Might As Well" thread

It might just be a helpful way to organize the lists and allow people to find builds that are similar to their own vehicle. Maybe automatically add "Tags" to each build so that searches will quickly isolate the specific year/model within the forum??

I've got mixed feelings on this. As an anal-retentive type I like to have everything in once place.

However, one of the things I like best about Greg's build thread (and others) is that it's in a sub-forum. It stays relatively free of 'junk' posting and everyone contributing to the thread is adding to it.

I also read the threads in the garage, but I enjoy the ones in the 1st and 2nd gen forums a lot more. I'll be hopefully starting a full tear-down / rebuild on mine next summer and was planning to do it in the 73-91 forum to keep the noise down.

If we did this, would we be required to do build threads in that forum (it would be moved there) or would we have a choice?

Just thinking and embracing my internal devil's advocate.....

That's a good point Ben.

I know that I'd be really irritated if my build thread ended up derailed with a bunch of unrelated discussions or by some newbs who didn't care about clogging it up with a bunch of off-topic questions.

That could be controlled better by making it a "members only" area, but having a members only area as a sub-category off one of the only free-to-everyone forums might not be well-received.

Hm. Have you looked at 'build threads' in the garage over the years? I'd say 'build-threads' in the garage are maybe 10% tech, and 90% of a melange of nitwit posts like "...subscribed..." or "...cool, dude...". If one happens to search for specific tech, and a 'build thread' comes up - one can pretty much forget finding anything useful. Very few of these threads are a useful tech resource, the majority might as well be in the Lounge.

i'd love it!
most of what i have been doing since i started playing on here is reading build threads (at work..cough cough) to get motivation for my heap. some in the garage, some are in the year sections. itd be great to have them all in one spot so you could just go down the list and read em all.
only way i really see them now is if its been updated so its near the top.

I vote yes for a public build thread sub forum and I also like the name "Under The Knife".
