Building a 60 from the housing up.

It's way easier to set gears up out of the truck but once that's done mount the housing and assemble from there. That thing will be way heavy fully assembled.

Not worth the trouble of a bare housing. The rest of the parts add up fast. You'll have way more in it than a used one is worth.

Ahh... I misread his post. I agree, better to buy a complete axle. The missing hardware alone will cost a bunch.

Just depends, if you're planning on upgraded knuckles, aftermarket hubs, crossover steering, upgraded axle shafts and such it might make sense to start with a housing. But for most guys and in most cases, no. I'd start with something complete even if it needs a 100% rebuild you'd be better off.

if all out super 60 build its cheeper to buy brand new axle built to your specs.

if just a basic 60 fresh up / clean up and run it then buy a complete axle and reseal it / service the bearings and brakes / replace the u-joints and run it.

and bare housing with no gears is little harder to set up new gears in as you have to start from scratch .

shipping a bare housing is over 100 bucks if you stay on the east coast .

I built my 60 in project stubby ( sig line below link ) and buy the time I was done it was more than new from dynatrac for a built to spec axle and even high pinion housing from them .
