building a rear bumper *updated finished pics 6/25 on p.2*

I just wanted to let ya'll know... I just wired up my reverse lights that are in the bumper. Holy crap, they're friggin bright! It's just 1156 bulbs in there, but I am very pleasantly surprised. I've got them wired to a push/ pull switch directly from the battery so I can have 'em on when I'm not in reverse. That's all, just wanted to express my joy.

That turned out real well. You mentioned the bulbs but what kind of light housing did you use?

I got them from a place called "Trucker's Lighthouse" in Nashville, TN. They carry all the lights and bulbs for semi-trucks, fire trucks, and law enforcement. They are about 4" in diameter. I had the choice of the "pop in" which use a rubber grommet or these flange mount ones, they also had some crazy bright LED ones for like $70ea. They should just be a standard flange mount taillight housing for semis/ utility beds (back-up light in this case but the lenses are interchangeable/ replaceable- $3ea). You can probably find them at well equiped truck stops too.

Quick question on your bumper. How wide is the area where the license plate is? On the outside of the tube before it angles towards the back and then also how wide is it from the angled pieces from side to side?

I'm at school right now, so no measurements yet. I remember some ballpark numbers, but I'll dig out a tape and get you some real numbers this evening when I get home. I just wanted to let you know that I saw this.

Great looking work!

By the way...

8" tall by 3" deep, 3/16" wall thickness. The overall width is 72.5" (approx. from inside edge of factory back-up light to inside edge of opposite back-up light). The taper starts on either side of a 38" span in the center that is the full 8" tall (I believe the frame rails are 34") and tapers to 3" on the sides.

THAT'S what I've been waiting for! Thanks! ;)

Those dimensions he already had posted up here. I'm asking about a different dimension now. I want to know how large of an opening he cut in the face of the tube and then also where the plates angle inwards what the dimension between those are.

Sorry it's so late... long day.

The bend is rounded so this is not exact, but from bend to bend (overall superficial hole size) is ~21" wide. The license plate surface is 15" wide, but it is a separate peice with nuts welded to the back laid on top of the angled pieces and is only ~1.75" into the bumper. If you follow the angled pieces down to where they are welded to the back wall of the tube, there is 12" between them.

I want a bumper just like this one for my truck :waytogo:

One question though, how heavy did it come out to be?

I don't know exactly what it weighs, but it really isn't that bad. I doubt it is significantly heavier than the factory bumper (especially when you consider a separate reciever hitch mount with the factory setup). Using 3/16 rather than 1/4 definitely saved some weight. It takes 2 people to mount it up, but not because it is excessively heavy. It is just easier for one person to hold it while a second starts the bolts.

I know it's an old thread but wanted to say, Very Nice. And it deserves to be brought back to the top especially since I searched and found what I was looking for and may help others with current questions.
