building a roof rack

SilverMiner said:
I think that has helped my roof - the tire is attached to the carrier, but the weight actually is distributed over the entire circumference of the tire. ..........

It appears by the two large horizontal marks on the roof that rack was designed to spread the load across that large surface area. Actually thats a good way for the installation. You could add two additional runs from front to back or x-cross to spread it out even more.

Hell, just throw a 4x8 sheet of plywood on top, bolt it down in 50 places, attach an old shopping cart you can steal from a homeless person, trim to fit, paint to match, your ready to go :)

hmmmm, top and rack?

You bet. The rack has been modified to hold 4 off road lights facing forward, and it attaches to the top very similar to the way a yakima rack would. I had to modify some of the cross-bars to make the #'s fit up, basically involved moving some tabs about 8 inches or so. You have my email, you wanted to buy my engine so send me a message and we'll talk $$.

This is the way it has been for close to a year now, last week I got a floor put in it in the expanded wire variety

....It actually weighs less than 100 lbs
Alright.....all kidding aside.....Thats not too bad for something that size. What size material is the frame made from? I like the full length racks myself. Might as well use all the space up there.

You do have 1-ton suspension dont you :haha: :haha:

Ok, took a couple pics of my rack today now that the expanded wire floor is all in place. Still need to finish making the mounts and light brackets, wire it, paint it and mount it.

That looks great ! Any ideas on how to mount it to the roof? Are you going to make it removable or permenant ?

Ya know, I have some extra schedule 40 PVC pipe and a bunch of T fittings...I wonder... :hack:
