Hey I'm going to toss my 4cyl out of my 86 4runner. It can't turn 38's very well down the highway. I am going to swap in a 350, but it needs to be street legal. In TX the only motor swap law is "the motor can't be from an older truck" so it has to be an 86 and up. I've done research and really haven't found anything helpful. All I'm planning on doing is a rebuild and maybe one of those ruff loping cams :D (not building a racing motor) then putting it in. I wanted a carb for less wiring but from what I've read I'm under the impression that in 87 it went to TBI. I also want to stay as old as possible less computers and sensors. What is the best route for me to go? I've got the nv4500 trans, plan on a np205 behind that and keeping the TOY axles until they break and then put in a dana 60 and a GM 14bolt... So my only problem is the main peice? Any info helps Thanks
-Cody

an 86 350 looks awfully damn close to a 73 350. seriously, nobody cares. well maybe yall austinites do.

How about all of that emissions crap? would it bolt on? Believe me I don't care but the inspectors do! Like I said I'd like to go as old as possible less extra un-needed crap!

Go with a TBI 350. Super simple, not much to the wiring and sensors and you get all the benefits of FI. Stock TBI 350 has plenty of power to break the diffs you have...no need for much more than that.

That's what I was thinking one of those out of an older model. What year, model would be the best to try to find? Man I'll be lucky if I don't explode these diffs with a 350! I'm gonna have to learn to have a light foot:D

I'd recommend the 350 TBI. You will learn to love the EFI. Or, if you can find a TPI engine out of a Camaro or Firebird (305 or 350)

TBI started in 87 right? when did the TPI start? So my best bet would be a TBI LO5 350 right?

TPI started up in 85, I'd go for an 88+ unit though to get speed density. Takes well to snorkles :D

However, I'd go for TBI over all else. Next to no emissions to deal with, and about as simple of an injection system as you are going to find anywhere. Very reliable, and more than enough torque to snap your diffs in half :D

Thanks guys, I'm gonna start looking for probably an 88-90 350 with a tbi setup on it.

Be prepared. I dunno if it was just my buddies Toilet but he had fitment issues. He had too order flex lite slim fans, shave down the grill and all to get the rad and fans in there. He went with all Chevy running gear including axles on his 88 4 Runner. This was a fun machine tho.
