I have been needing a new work bench for a while since I re-arranged the garage and the old bench with it's particle board top got axed.
I decided this morning to make it happen so after a quick run to get material I got to work and came up with this. I think it's about as simple as they come but it serves my needs. 1/2" top (weighed 240lbs on it's own) and 2" sch 40 pipe for the legs.

I was happy with my welds on the legs so I snapped a pic.

Sweet, nothing like having a SOLID work bench. What are the dimensions of the top and how much did that plate cost?

It's 5' X 2'-6"

The girl sold it to me as rem @ $0.65 a pound for the top. So it was about $160 for the top. With everything I'm into it for a little under $300 and I have a bunch of the pipe, angle iron and flat bar left over.

nice, I am working on a new bench myself, I sourced a 2" thick, 3x6' butcher block type worksurface, it was a reject from an Army maintenance facility (the civilian chick didn't like the color) I am going to do basically the same thing you did, thanks for giving me a better idea of what I want to do.

Thats badass, what'd it cost though?

i'm gonna guess less than $300?  :thumb:

< waaaaay jealous.....

agreed

I want one like that but I want it anchored to my floor. Can't count the number of times having something like that would have made this that or the other way easier to do

well.. Avery actually kinda got me going on this...

i did have a similar hunk-o-steel kicking around work.... it was like 1/2" x 30" x 40", woulda been perfect.. stupid boss found a use for it recently.. ;)

but i called my welder bud about a hunk of something i could get a deal on... he's got all kinds of stuff out there.... labor should go to the rig, but I'll take a day to build a fab table... and I have 4 of most psycho perfect locking caster wheels for one that I got free from the last marina to use on it....... mine needs/wants to be mobile..

I'd like to bolt one to the floor as well but being that I live at home I don't think that one would get by mom. If I had a say in it I'd leave her car out and move everything to the middle but she has to be able to fit her car in every night without banging her doors on whatever is on the side. :doah:

Looks great man. I have a 1/2 steel top table too, love it.

a mobile workbench is great. I move mine around a lot, only problem comes when you need to torque on something heavy in the vise....it tends to push the table around.

you guys got me all revved up on this now.. maybe a new fab table will motivate me to work on the rig...

Nice. I've been stuck in the design phase for weeks but this is a great idea for a project this weekend. Nice job!

I have like 2 huge workbenches in my garage right now. They are both cluttered catch alls.

I want to minimize to one mobile one like young Avery built and one that is attached to the floor with enough room around it that I can get a good hammer swing on whatever I feel is not doing what I ask of it at that particular time.

Although the mobile I want as thick as I can get as It will be used for mostly fab type stuff, unusual pattern bending, and temporary jigs.

This summer my garage is getting torn apart and much stuff thrown away.

So my dad was looking at my bench last night while we were riveting new locks on the service bed on my Dodge and he came up with what might be a good idea.
He measured it and the hitch on my dodge lines up with the lower shelf on the bench. He said why can't you just weld a 2" receiver hitch up under the shelf and then make a piece of 2" square tube that would slip in the hitch then slip in the one on the bench. It's not often that I'd need something to hold the bench down but if I ever did that just might work.

As long as you only need it anchored when you aren't working on the truck, sounds like a good plan. But you'd be amazed what the increased leverage will do if you happened to have the front on stands or something. Wouldn't want to risk anything like that....

Looking good!
