If I wanted to BUILD a D44 that could take a real beating (its possible) what parts companies would be a good start. Who makes the best shafts, carriers, and such.

Mud drags, Not rocks.

Reid knuckles are BEAST.
Yukon shafts are BEAST.
Bonefish Fab's 'D44 kingpins' are BADA$$!!!!
Sierra gears are also, well you get it.... :D

Tbh, I would just build a custom 14b front, for the same cost.
If you have the facilities.

But, if not, I would definitely weld the tubes.
A really good truss should be involved, too. :deal:

I have a buddy that has run mud trucks for a long time. He's wanting to build a new one(been out of it for about 5 years). His old truck had a BUILT d44 in it and held up to 1400+hp. He didnt build it though so has no idea where to get the strongest stuff. I mentioned the d60 option and he said no due to size and weight:dunno: and he never broke his old d44 so he kinda has a point. Just figured I'd ask here to give him a good start on stuff to search for:D

RCV Shafts are the ****. I had them in my truck, i broke a 14 bolt shaft before the rcv's. And they have a you break it, they replace it no questions asked warranty.

You would most likely want to retube the axle with some .500+ wall dom. And a bearing cap girdle.

Rcv 's
full c to c truss
Reid knuckles
Spool
Drive slugs

That would get you pretty set. Although with mud may new overkill. What is planned tire size ?

I dont know on tire size. he was running 2 different ones before and had it set up for the front to turn slightly faster. He was battling 1 other guy for the fastest around. basically they both made exhibition runs. Like 3.5 sec or so every run.

what does RCV stand for or is that all I have to search for?

What Chris said. but you may want to check class rules, they may not allow the RCV ( just search for RCV thats the name of the company) if they don't then I would get 10 factory shafts and ctms.

Gear brand doesn't matter much the setup is more important.

How crazy is he going, might want to think about using a lightened gear set and a lightened spool. Helps the truck rev faster.

So we talking full size mud racer, rail, stripped out truck?

I agree I would build a 44 before I did a 60 depending on class.

He raced before so he knows how the pits are. I wouldn't truss it unless the pits were really rough.

its a rectangle square tube frame with (I think) a 46 chevy cab on it. set up like a truck not a rail. he's still aquiring parts right now. 4 link rear, 3 link front (Or vice versa:dunno:) he was looking at motors last night. His old one was 700+hp with a 700hp nitros system.

He also does asfalt snowmobile drags and has a fully BUILT turbo charged arctic cat running nitros. Last dyno without the nitros was 400+hp. Its a FAST snowmobile.:waytogo:

So he is probably ok running RCVs.

Look at getting the gears heat treated and cryoed. I have done that with Toyota diffs runnning 40s and it works well.
