I am getting close to needing some bump stops (still working on front shock mounts).

Post up what you have done.

I am leaning toward getting your basic poly bump stops and mounting them to the spring plates and making a place for them to "land" on the frame. I'd rather do it that way than have them mounted to the frame and hitting the center pin and u-bolt nuts.

I have also looked at the foam deals that you slide over your shack shafts. Seems like a pretty good idea, but then you don't have much adjustability - what if, after flxing it out, you want to raise/lower the bump stop by 1/2"?

Those fancy air bump jobbies are not in the budget.
 
What about a piece of allthread and a threaded sleeve with a jamnut to hold the position you want?

Changing the bumpstop height would be as simple as loosening the jam nut and threading the bumpstop up or down 1" or 1.5" or whatever you wanted. Lock the nut back down and see if it works... :thinking:

05 Ferd stupid duty rear bumpstops......polyeurethane foam, single stud mounting, and 15ish bucks!!!!

I know I would fold a piece of all thread in half the first time I hit a rock, I wouldn't go that route.

I think you're on the right track mounting the bump stop to the axle and the pad on the frame. Mine is the opposite and I feel your approach might be a little better.

guesstimation that that bump yields about 2" of travel before it really starts to limit things.

What bump stops are those? Do you think 2" is pretty accurate? Fully bottomed at 3"?

In any case, what really counts is the little blue line, though...:D

You need to get a nice AN fitting and braided steel line for the ARB to match the vent. :D

I think the ORD just resells Daystar bump stops, can anybody confirm that?
 
I have those same "competition style bumstops" from ORD. Seems like it was about $120 or so dollars for four of them.:eek1: I wasn't aware of the cheap Ford Super Duper bumstops. I have them mounted where the stock ones were at. They work good at keeping the tires off the sheet metal and don't really seem to limit travel during normal driving at all. I bottom the suspension out in the front over bad railroad tracks and whoop-de-doos and stuff quite frequently and haven't noticed any problems. If I look where I think the bumpstops would hit, it is right on the u-bolts, kind of off-center from where the ideal spot would be. One side in the front is worse than the other, but I can't remember which. I don't know if this is actually where the contact happens, but I can't see any kind of damage or wear at all on the bumpstops or the u-bolts or u-bolt plates. It would seem to be better to have the bumpstop on the axle and the stop plate on the frame though.
 
My PERSONAL experience with the poly bumpstops like yours, Michael, is that I killed them BOTH in one trip to Moab.........
 
I run extended bumpstops in the rear to make sure the exhaust pipes never get hit. Judging by where the shiny part of the rear shock shafts ends, the rear axle has never been up high enough to touch the pipes, but I just want to make sure.

You guys must be riding pretty hard in Moab to destroy your bumpstops so quickly. Does that happen due to extreme articulation or hitting bumps really hard?
 
Mostly high speed stuff is what killed them, I think. Chris, they were just mounted in the stock location.
 
I really need some bump stops too. Ive got a good bit of passanger time in GeorgiaGabes rig (52" springs and 42's) and its much more stable than mine on side hills. hes got it setup so theres only about an inch of uptravel.

I think I've encountered this Georgia Gabe character on a couple of trail rides before and observed his driving style. He needs all the stability he can get!:haha: Very entertaining!

Yup! The "competition style" poly bumpstops are junk! (for hard use anyway)
The Ferd Stupid Doody bumpstops have survived for 2 years and taken quite a beating
 
I'm actually pretty happy with the bump stops I have, the one key to making them survive is making sure they can't squeeze out to one side or the other. That will tear them in short order.

How do you make sure they can't squeeze out? Make sure they're hitting something flat?
