Bumper Build Thread

non-paying members can't see attachment but you can upload photos to photobucket or something and then post the image code and then anyone can see them

Or tell the guy to buy a membership and he can see most of the pics. Unfortunately, since I only have access to my work computer for the time being the firewall the company put on our server doesn't allow photobucket, youtube, etc to be viewed. So just keep the pics coming the way you're doing it.:D:D

My thought exactly, I usually only photobucket link my photos on my build thread pics or what I want anyone to see.

I feel bad for the guy that doesn't have a job but he probably shouldn't be dumping money into offroading until he can afford it. On a different note, what do you guys think so far. Is it easy to picture how the brackets are going to look when they are done?

Now I get what you are doing after seeing the brackets cut out the way they are. Looks to be a great idea. So what are you going to do for the hinge? What are you going to put on the bumper, tire, gas cans, hi-lift?

Well, I've been rethinking the hinge and carrier. I found a build thread on offroadfab that has a pretty sweet swingout carrier. Basically, its sort of like there is a piece of "C" channel on the end with a rod in it for the hinge. I suppose this keeps the carrier captive in the event of a roll. The arm is bent so that the center section is farther from the vehicle than the hinge and clamp. It bows away from the vehicle if you get my drift. This allows the hoop that the tire is mounted on to lean in toward the vehicle which probably takes a lot of stress of the hinge and arm. The idea is that the CG of the spare tire is closer to being vertically over the hinge.

I just re-read that and I barely understand it.

Here is the link to the thread I'm talking about. This bumper is bad ass.

BTW, I'm so close to just buying a bender. I hate that I can't do bends. I feel like I'm just waisting my money buy cutting and welding the angles in the tube.

Hows about throwin at least one real pic up for those of us who might be out of work to see, or offer a bunch of attitude and advice on where not to "dump" money.

There I fixed it. At the risk of ostracizing myself from the site my only comment is, what I thought I might get was at the most a picture I could see, at the least nothing. Either of which would have been fine. What I got was a condescending attitude because I am not a paying member therefore I dont support the site. When in reality my presence here is support in that the number of hits a site receives benefits it producers and sponsors in advertisement ratings and dollars. And to avoid flaming me any further in Josh's bumper thread PM me instead. Sorry about the thread-jack.

:weld::weld::weld::weld::weld::weld::weld::deal:

Hey Boise, support he site. We all understand first hand about money being tight and the $25 membership fee can always go to family needs at the moment and that's fine. Actually it's the smart thing to do. There are just so many visitors to the site that complain because of access to different areas of CK5 that us PAYING Members get a little tired of hearing it. My guess would be that the membership fees are what support the site and not the number of hits for ratings. Not exactly the same as TV advertising.

Now back to our regular scheduled program>>>> Joshthemule

Looks pretty like a nice design man, let me know if you need a hand with it, I've been wanting to come check the Burb out in person anyway. I have a swing away I'm putting on the Burb over the holidays has a real nice and simple hinge design that might help you out.

Hopefully I'll be done with this bumper in a few weeks and I can come by after work or something.

Okay, so the guy that is going to let me use his iron worker can't meet me till Tuesday so I had to figure out what I could do today without the brackets.

First I cut the shackle mounts to length and cleaned them up.

Then I cut out he slots where the shackle mounts will protrude from the flange on the rear face of the bracket

Next on the list was to modify the frame ends. The stock ends flare out and stick out too much. I didn't want to just cut off the ends so I... well just look at the pictures.

I finally got my brackets bent today so tomorrow should be a marathon of building. I'll try to remember to stop and take pictures along the way. Here are some pics from today

First, we just did the bending with a torch and a hammer.

Then, the most awesome thing ever, we used an iron worker to punch the holes in the pintle hitch mounting plate. Those are 9/16ths holes in 3/4 plate. His machine will do 1 1/16th holes in 3/4 plate.

here are some more pics of the plates and the bumper mock up on the burban. Hopefully the brackets make since now. I think it will work well.

Josh, looks great so far. Are you going to put any type of material across the top of the two horizontal bars such as heavy guage mesh or diamond plate. Maybe something for better slip resistance?

I'll probably put some diamond plate on it. I just want to get the structure build and then figure out if it needs any more reinforcement around the hitch. Then I'll put some plat on. Just the top though.

Serious Progress

Your tax dollars where hard at work today. What I mean is, if you don't know already, I'm in the army and work is slow around DC the last few weeks. I think all the generals and politicians have gone home from Christmas. So what did I so at work all day? You guessed it. I pulled the truck into the hanger (I brought all my tools) and worked on my bumper all day. Its pretty self explanatory so I'll just so all the pics and you can ask questions. The ends are yet to be done and right now its only tack welded.

are you gonna cap the tube ends or tie them together at the end of main tube?

I'm going to tie them to the main tube. I wish I had a tube bender but butt welding will have to do. On the very end, I'm going to cap them all with a single plate.
