Is it necessary to box in a bumper when building one? I made on out of 1/4 dimond plate and beveled the edges and welded it with a 7018 rod. Im think it i would be a could idea but i never built a bumper before. I was going to ass some triangles to in the insside to make it strong but i it ways a ton as it is.

not bad for for free materials... plus i have some 5 inch 55 watt lights to recess in the front of it and maybe a custom brush guard

Looks like a school shop?

I personally don't like checker, diamond or any grip plate ...but hey, it was free right? Looks like 1/4" which is way overkill as far as weight goes. With 1/4" there shouldn't be a need to box anything, but gusseting the backside on the outboard side of the frame rails would help without adding too much more weight.
