Has anyone fabbed a Westin/Fey Universal Diamondstep rear bumper onto an 80s Suburban? And if so how many headaches came with it?

Uhhh....okayyy.....maybe I'm better off just fabbing the whole damn bumper...? Always liked the idea of a step bumper shaped like the counterweight on a gradall/crane anyway....the Westin was just a shortcut idea....

It might help to post up some pics to illustrate what your talking about and what your trying to achieve. jus say'n

I've heard of the company, but have no idea what it looks like... not really fab as much as modify.. which I'm sure can be done one way or another... worst case would be some sort of adapter plate on each rail prolly...

Thanks Ryoken that's about what I figured,I was just hoping someone had done it before. I measured a K10 pickup frame before and the distance between rails was the same as my 'burban, so I assumed there were other factors to why no step bumpers are offered for Suburbans...I mean 'real' utility type step bumpers, not the half plastic things most 'burbs have.

Aren't the frames for an 80's truck and burb about the same frame? Width and length?

That's what I've been finding in my research, online and in the dirt, but all the step bumpers I've looked at online say *Not Suburban* in the small print. I'm not sure if its a clearance issue with the barn doors or what and really wanted to avoid that DOH:doah:moment when my wrenching rush turns to buzzkill as I see why it won't work.

BUT I tend to do things the hard way anyway. I'm on a mission to evolve my 85 Subbie into the Ultimate Workbeast so a good utility bumper is a must. Seems there is a shortage of accessories for our pre 90 'burbans so I may just be adding the bumper to the list of "I'll make it MY &@#%ING SELF" items.

I've seen them on Suburbans. I've picked up these bumpers from the local wreckers for $25. Very common on 80's GM trucks. I've even seen some guys mount them on the front of trucks also (rarely, but I have seen it).

Thanks Ned. Around here no one I've seen has done it,and I can notice a K10/20 from a mile:rolleyes:, but it's good to know others are likeminded. Hmm on front too? Cool!! You just jumped my plans ahead about a lightyear! I'll need to be able to get stuff off my rack from both ends of the beast and that would be an awesome solution. Not to mention it'll make morphing into a pushbumper alot easier:waytogo: I like seeing people switch lanes on the beltway when a toothy looking workbeast cruises up behind them!!!

You can make 3/8" flat stock mounting plates and mount the bumper as you see fit. Go to a wrecker, find a mounted bumper and you'll see how easy it would be to make your own plates for these.

I couldn't find any pics of them front mounted on a 80's GM truck, but here's a frt mount on a '54 Dodge:

I'll see if that Burb is still sitting there with the rear Fey bumper and snag a pic for you - about mid-week I'll be in that area.

MUCH Thanks Ned!!! That Dodge looks like it means business! Fabbing heavy metal is one of the few areas I'm not experienced in...yet...I've always been a fan of oddball improvisation though.

AWESOME!!! The 'burb even looks like mine! After I painted over the old blue/gray with rustoleum white and swapped the 85 front for an 89 of course but WOW I couldn't find a better example if I tried! And I HAVE!!! Thanks Ned!!!!
