I have solid steel flat stock rear bumper. I wanted to purchase a 5 foot firestick with all of the stuff (spring mount, quick disconnect, stud mount kit)...

just curious since this is my first CB attempt, can I just drill the bumper and mount it in the bumper itself? Is there a problem if the mount threads through the bumper itself?

This is actually what is on my shopping list....anything else to add?

1 x Firestik FS CB Antenna (Firestik FS) Length 5' Color Black
1 x CB Antenna Stud Mount (Screw-on) (Firestik K-4A)
1 x Firestik CB Coax - 18 Feet (Firestik K8A)
1 x CB Antenna Quick Disconnect (PTKD1X)
1 x CB Antenna Springs (Heavy Duty) (Firestik SS-3H)

There shouldn't be an issue as long as there is a good ground through the bumper.

However, since you are using a 5' tall antenna, your range is going to be severely limited by the fact that the antenna doesn't clear the body of the vehicle. Mounting it higher, such as near the cowl, would give you a bit of clearance over the vehicle, vastly improving signal range.

Got it. I was under some sort of impression that I needed one of those fancy little brackets, versus drilling and putting it right through the bumper.

your best bet would be stainless 102 whip (they dont brake) mounted on the bumper. no need for the quick disconect, and can bend over to clip to driprail for the garage.radio shack carries the whip , spring and base you need..

I run a Uniden CB and a 102" SS whip on the rear bumper with a little nylon washer to isolate the antenna from the bumper (this old picture shows it below the bumper but now I run it on top) and after a quick tune-up at the local CB shop I can talk for miles and miles...
When we were in the dunes last time I had no problem talking to guys 5 miles inland and I was out in the middle of the sand so I'd say it works.

Like ghostrider said Radio Shack carries the 102" SS whips for cheap.
