Trying my hand at building a bumper to accept my new 16.5TI.

looks pretty burly, you gonna fill any of it in?
A solid piece of 1/8" will go from end to end on the bottom (the winch will sit on it) and both ends (the triangles) will be covered on top and boxed in on the back (to keep the mud and water etc. out). It will then be powder coated.

HOLY CRAP! :eek1: What does that thing weigh? What did you use for steel (thickness)? :D

The boby is 2x6x1/4 and the mounting brackets are 1/2" plate. I don't know what it weighs but I can heft it around just fine. Oh, the winch going in it weighs 134 pounds:eek1: so the bumper had to be stout.

Can you move the winch back a little between the frame rails to help with the approach angle? That is my main concern when building bumpers... Looks good and stout....

It is as far back as it will go. The 16.5TI is longer than the space between the frame is wide:( . I am only loosing about two inches of aproach angle due to this bumper being a couple inches higher off the ground than the stock bumper and it only sticks out six inches more than stock. And since we don't do as much, if any, rock crawling in AK, the entrance angle isn't as important; if I need to, I can just use this heavy @$$ bumper as a plow:wink1:

It's finally done! I like the way the winch sits in there. I'll get it back from the powder coater next week and will get it mounted.

They were cut on a plasma water table. I had them cut out of 1/2" plate.

You can see how the bracket ties into the tube. It should be a very strong joint.

wow! looks great! i wanna build more bumpers for myself but the one time i did.. it was a PITA to get my shackle holes actually drilled... cost me like 40bucks to have them punch the 2 holes for shackles

It weighs arouns 120lbs and the winch weighs around 130lbs. The main body of the bumper is 2x6x1/4 tube 74 inches long, the brackets attaching the tube to the frame are 1/2 in. plate 17 in. x 6 in., and it is boxed in with 1/8 in. sheet. The hardware is: six 9/16 grade 8 zinc bolts to hold it to the frame and 7/16 grade 5 bolts supplied by Warn to hold the winch. The shackle holes are 1 1/8 in. in diameter. Mounted on the driver's side is a remote jumper-cable box that goes with 25 foot jumper cables. Under the hood are dual batteries connected by 2 AWG welding cable with top-mount terminals soldered in place. The aux battery's neg. cable is of the same construction and is grounded to the engine block. Future upgrades will be: Optima Yellow Top batteries with a contious duty solenoid between them and an 140amp alternator.
I really enjoyed building my first bumper but could never have gotten it done without help from my friend, thanks Ben

Thanks for all the great comments (keep 'em coming); any questions will be answered if I can.

THAT IS BEAUTIFUL!!!!!! I'm green with envy:D . I would love to have that for my K5. I may have to start experimenting. Can you feel the difference (bumper + winch = 250 lbs) with that much weight on the front end?

Great Job, Bud!!

Thanks,
BB

wow, looks like mounting that thing would be a PITA. But it'd probably be worth it because that's one of the nicest looking winch bumpers I've seen. Awesome work dude, I'll eventually try my hand at doing that, but I'm sure it won't even compare to your skills.
