I'm having trouble finding a heavy duty front bumper for my '78 Jimmy. I've searched the threads and about the only decently priced bumper i can find is the diy4x for $550. All of the other big names either don't make one for a truck that old, or want something like $1500.

Suggestions?

I'm pretty skilled with a torch and welder, so if there are any good plans out there, I can build it. I would prefer to build my own, figure it would be cheaper.

I don't know exactly what you're looking for, but I get JC Whitney emails all the time from where I ordered something for my motorcycle. They have a range of parts that go on old trucks too, I've just never bought any from them because I haven't researched into how good they are... But, this is what I just found:

EDIT - LMC also has just regular old replacment bumpers for comparable prices, they even have one just in primer for 100 bucks if that is more intersting...

Yea, I figured that's what you meant, but thought I'd throw out that info just in case. Good luck on finding one that you actually like... If I had the tools and skill, I'd build my own from scratch.

i have a old 70's era wrecker push bumper for my 1 truck. built like a tank.

otherwise its diy4x for me next set. :thumb:

and kirt will do any design you want . just got to pay aspr the job requirments.

You can save a bunch by building it yourself.
Very simple: Steel Tube 6x3x3/16, weld ends closed, build frame mounts. Cost maybe $100.

If you want something fancier and are willing to spend some time on it, make the entire bumper out of 1/4" plate.

There are a bunch of really good ideas that people have built. Tons of pictures on here if you search for bumpers. You are limited only by your abilities, time, and imagination.

I did 1/4" tube bumpers on my 71. For my 91. I want to use 1/4" plate and mimic the stock shape.

If you can weld, there's no reason to buy a bumper.

Pull off the stock bumper, buy some heavyweight cardboard and start cutting and taping shapes together until you have a pattern that looks the way you want.

Trace the patterns to some thick plate steel, cut 'em out and melt 'em together.

......and post pics along the way! :deal:

Not very good at overhead welding

It's all .250" except for the tube, that is 3"x3"x.120". Mostly just out there for me to use a high lift on, I made it short because I'm going to taper the front, and I had a 48" stick lying around with no use for it.

The plate is all welded inside and out, and the outside edges were ground flat and wrapped with 1"x1"x.250" angle.

I was going to run a web down the length of the ~35* angle strap in the back, but I've worked it pretty hard and nothing has shown signs of being over-stressed. The whole thing is light enough that I can carry it around, even with one arm, and I'm not a very big guy.

I like where thats going... I've got a bullbar/winch/reciver thing that I can build around. there will be plenty of picks when I do get started...
